Summary
Acknowledge, Learn, And Move On (ALAMO) is my personal strategy for tackling the negative thoughts and catastrophising behaviour that comes with low self esteem. It is loosely based on cognitive behavioural techniques I've learned in my on-going quest to fully internalise the Red Pill and successfully give zero fucks.
Body
One of the biggest challenges I've faced whilst internalising the Red Pill has been my low self esteem, which causes me to constantly evaluate my behaviour in a negative way.
I'm sure we've all experienced something like this at some point...
Upon approaching a girl
"You fluffed your introduction, she thinks you're creepy"
At job interviews
"You messed up on that question, they won't hire you"
At the gym
"Everyone's judging you, you don't belong here"
For the under-confident, any action can be picked up by the low-self-esteem-bitch-fairy and spun into a neat little package of self-loathing. It's demoralising, exhausting, and can quickly turn people towards comfort activities such as video games, netflix, porn, and so on. Keep letting this happen and the desire to avoid a perceived 'painful' stimulus outweighs the will to change and improve.
Essentially, this is an internal shit test designed to stop you giving zero fucks. And we all want to give zero fucks, right?
So what's an aspiring Redpiller to do when faced with this sort of low self esteem feedback loop? My response is to Acknowledge, Learn, And Move On. Or ALAMO for short.
Let's use the job interview example to break it down...
Acknowledge
"Yes, that one question could have been answered better. But you know what, it's not the end of the world."
It's important to recognise the core of truth in the negative thought, but at the same time you need to acknowledge the fact that the issue is not as destructively catastrophic as your inner voice would have you believe. Make like Spock and be logical about it. Face your shit like a man, take ownership and start thinking about what you can learn from the experience. Which brings us on to the next step.
Learn
"Now I know what to do if it ever comes up again. I need to do more research / practice for next time."
You should always be learning from your experiences. To stay still is to stagnate, and that isn't the way to reach your true potential. So what could you have done better? More importantly, what will you do differently next time? This is where you arm yourself for future incidents, allowing you to shut down issues quickly and confidently. Aim for brevity and go with your gut on this one - excessive introspection is not what we're here for. If in doubt, approach a respected peer for their take.
And Move On
"So I know what I did wrong, and what I can do to limit the chances of it happening again. What's next?"
The most important step. You recognised what went wrong, and came up with a plan of action for next time. Now file the experience away until it's relevant again - constantly reviewing isn't going to do you any favours. If you live in the past your experience of the present will suffer, so don't let that happen. I find meditation is useful here, but if you don't have time for this some simple deep breaths (inhale through nose, count to 5, exhale through mouth) will work wonders.
Since adopting this methodology I've come along way in crushing the low-self-esteem-bitch-fairy, and find it a useful tool to support the staples of lifting, meditation, and developing social dynamism. Once you've built the habit of recognising negative thoughts early, shutting them down and maintaining a strong internal frame will become second nature.
TL;DR
Sometimes we sabotage our attempts at giving zero fucks with negative thought loops. If you're prone to beating yourself up for minor issues, Acknowledge, Learn And Move On (ALAMO).
