Sorry man, it sucks, most of us know. My lab was put down at 14, he got sick one day and went down hill very quickly. He was a great dog, even loved baths.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Sorry man. Dogs are family. Best companion a guy could have. Take time to grieve but don't wait too long in getting another one. You'll likely save his/her life if it's a shelter dog, and they'll save yours in many ways as well.

dogs are man's best friend but women get diamonds because they value material goods that make them look good over real affection. It's a simple platitude but there is truth in it. Most men are happy with simple but real things whereas women want the expensive things that were complicated to make (and a lot of death and suffering to get in her jewelry collection).

I feel for you mate. Just remember that it was the best thing for your dog. It would be cruel to keep him here whilst he is suffering. I recently had my dog put down at the age of 14 as well. What helped me was the thought that she went out with pride. She didn’t suffer and we didn’t force her to stay with us just out of our own greed. Cherish the memories you have together, they will never be forgotten and you will be a better person for your times spent together :)

You're lucky to have had him for 14 years. That's a good age for a dog. I've got a trusty yellow lab that's getting close to 14. I hope he lives longer. Just remember, when it comes to dogs, they are all like that ADALT (and that's a good thing). Get yourself a pup and start over.

This hits home for me. My dog is 14 and his liver enzymes have been high recently. I think about his future passing a lot, and cherish every moment I spend with him. I hope you got the chance to do the same. I'm sorry for your loss, man, and wish you the best in your time of grief. Nothing can ever replace the friend you've lost, but when you're ready, you can always love another dog the same way you loved your friend. It's good to know that you can love something on this planet as much as you loved your dog- remember that no one can take away your memories, and that you had a being in your life that loved you unconditionally. Not everyone in this world gets to have that.
