Where you born yesterday? How many years has it been politically incorrect to point out that promiscuity increases sexually transmitted diseases? A few years ago we had some uber-priveliged white female elite law school student go before the whole contry and demand taxpayers buy her contraceptives. When people called her a slut, they were vilified.
[–]OutWithTheNew9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
For decades, no centuries, shaming was a functional tool to keep people in line with "societal" norms.

Yep, especially true for females, a high BMI is sign of slow death.
There are 3 body types in nature, and I don't mean SJW bullshit nonsense like curvy and the likes. The three body types are ectomorph (lean, tall, 'stickman'), mesomorph (middle ground) and endomorph (broad, stocky, 'caveman'), and there you can cover the entire world population with those.
Men have a broader margin because we typically have a higher body mass by default, our muscles and bones tend to be bigger than females. This is especially true for men with an endomorphic body.
It's doesn't mean that men should allow themselves to be fat slobs, but that big guys are not necessarily unhealthy. Just look at rugby players, most of them are endomorph, rugby wasn't made for stickmen but for cavemen. No one that I know would call rugby players unhealthy, if anything they tend to be bags of testosterone and get many women wet.
Nature likes to experiment with males, not with females, here is why men come in all three body types. For women, the vast majority of them are born ectomorph aka lean and slender. Then lazy women build a layer of fat around that.

I think apple (belly fat) v. pear (thigh/hip fat) body types are more readily accepted. The belly fat is more keenly associated with heart disease, so these pearwomen assume that the giant ham hocks on their bums are perfectly healthy.

Especially when we, the taxpayers, pay more in health insurance because half of the population are obese, sick slobs. In the states, you can get a free scooter covered by Medicare if you're too fat to walk. I shit you not.
With that said, I think we, as a society, need to step up our shaming.
[+]danbitmanholograf-6 points-5 points-4 points 8 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
What's wrong with fat shaming? Shouldn't self-destructive behavior be considered shameful?
Everyone has self destructive behaviors. Smoking, drinking, gaming, watching TV, posting on Reddit, none of this shit does you any good. So to only focus on weight is moronic and hypocritical.
Also bullying people into changing doesn't help. You're not going to make someone eat healthier by using stress, when stress is why they eat unhealthy in the first place. It does more harm than good.

What helps is not my concern
Sounds like woman logic. You are using emotion instead of rationality.
Your issue is that fat people eat tax money. Fine by me. But your reaction to your issue does not help fat people cost less tax money ( by losing weight ). Harassment just makes them eat more, ironically raising the amount of money they need.

increase or decrease each individual's medicare tax liability according to certain health metrics, including BMI
BMI is a horrible metric.
If it were up to me healthcare wouldn't be taxed at all. I don't see why I should pay for the surgeries of people if I'll never need one myself.

BMI is a horrible metric because there are plenty people who are above average weight due to bulking up. BMI would show them as obese, as it cannot tell the difference between fat mass and muscle mass.
[–]bman00010 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Your comment is fair but it describes a small percentage of people. If you’re built like Arnold in his prime or Dave Bautista then yeah your BMI will be exaggerated. But most people with a high BMI look just as you’d expect them to look.
[–]danbitmanholograf0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
As far as I know, BMI doesn't even take age and sex into account. How could it ever accurately give you the fat % when it doesn't even use a different formula for men and women.
[–]Philletto0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The best way to encourage someone into a better lifesytle is consequences. Free mobility scooter or subsidised rents or cash handouts is removing the consequence of their actions. Every knee jerk reaction of the socialist discourages people from being better.
[–]TheToadShroom 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Also bullying people into changing doesn't help. You're not going to make someone eat healthier by using stress, when stress is why they eat unhealthy in the first place.
Yeah I can see that. Though I think transference is a thing. So maybe the overweight person will respond to peer pressure by eating less and exercising, and that original stress might be just transfered to some other area of their personality. Maybe they develop anorexia in response, or some other pathology totally unrelated to food.
Though that's a fatalistic way of looking at stress. Are we just forever doomed to toss our stress around like a hot potato between the different aspects of our personality, stress neither diminishing or increasing, but being constant despite our efforts?
It would be better to offer informative advice, rather than yell " Lose weight, fat ass ".
You're not helping anyone with the latter. You're making it worse.

Its a choice to not eat healthy. That's my fault.
What are you doing about it?
[–]cowboyfromhell3244 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Right now, nothing really. I go up and down on weight. I have some medical things that make most exercise quite difficult/ painful. But I'm gonna start with my diet here shortly. Most all my friends are very extreme exercisers, which is sorta out of the question for me. My biggest thing is mental. Lot of stress in an office setting. Stress equals food for me. So just gotta break the old patterns
[–]officerkondo3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
But I'm gonna start with my diet here shortly.
How about today, starting with your next meal?
You are on the right track in that diet is by far the biggest factor in body fat. You cannot out-exercise a bad diet. Best of luck to you, but remember that whether you succeed or fail is because of you, not medical issues or work stress. Replace old patterns with new patterns.
[–]nowhere_man__2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You should definitely try one of those trendy diets when you don't feel like you need to rely on stress food as much. Vegan/Keto/Etc get a bad rep because of dumb soccer moms, and hipsters, but I've seen it work wonders first hand for people overweight with zero excercise. I'm pretty thin, but I'd like to give vegan a go for a while just for health reasons.

I have a friend (no really, its not me) who should have hi cholesterol and type II diabetes because of his weight. But he doesn't. Hard to argue with that logic.

I guess... every guy is his own King.
Still... short of delusion, I don't understand how ANYONE can honestly, actually, truly be HAPPY being fat/obese.
At one point in my life I bloated up to 250-260 lbs. That's fat, that's obese (32.5 BMI). I'm 6"3 but even if you factor that in... yep... fat. Still not up in the 350 range... that's morbidly obese, I can't even imagine that.
Even at 250 I had a distinct quality of life change. My GF said she didn't find me as attractive, I wasn't able to run like I like to do, my fat gut made it hard to do basic stuff like tie my fucking shoe. I looked at photos of myself at the time and I look like a grotesque monster.
How anyone can be honestly, truly happy as a fat fuck I can not rap my head around that.

The goal is to cut your calorie intake. Loosing weight by excersise is possible but really inefficient in the end, since skeletal muscles are accountable for just 10-20% of our energy comsumption if I read that correctly, so I barely did any excersises.
So my secret is simple: I was mostly drinking a big cup of tea/coffee without sugar with either 2 boiled eggs or 100 gram of cottage cheese 5% fatness. 100g is a half of this white brick.
It helps you to eat something you'd hate to eat otherwise (like me)
It fills you up for up to 3 hours for laughable ~150 calories or even less.
If you feel full you are not stressed (stressful diet won't last) and not inclined to eat garbage food.
I just added some fruits on top of that and was keeping 500-700 calories a day when my minimal quota was 2k. I didn't feel like I was hungry and I wasn't stressed, but occasionally I was blacking out a little when I stood up too quickly. I just didn't care, I've had enough and went full YOLO, it turned out just fine. You don't have to do it like this, obviously. Just add cereals or something.
I'm 26 y.o., 180cm/5'11. At november 1 of 2017 I was 129kg (284lbs). Now I'm about 98kg (216 lbs) and haven't done it yet, but I'm still going.

A big thing people don't realize (in addition to the fact that drinks can have more calories than your lunch) is that exercise burns like jack shit for calories. We're talking like 40 minutes of straight jogging just to equal that frappucino.

CICO. Sugar is poison. Health starts with the diet (what you intake normally).
Physical exercise like walking isn’t bad, assuming you can meet goals. My grandparents, that’s pretty much all they did in their adult life (and a lot of it), and they lived into their 90s. I wouldn’t say they ate perfectly either, but it was balanced.
I have work to keep doing myself and make progress, yet that intake is such a huge factor that people miss on. Quantity and “what”. Booze doesn’t help either.
Now, flash forward to the situation today. I know women who are skinny-fat, and have no muscle tone. Proportions are right but it’s all mush. Some eat like crap, yet the outer package doesn’t quite reflect it. Now that they’ve hit the wall, some are busting at the seams.
Another woman I know, and I chuckle at this one, is disgusting, but typical modern “body positive” feminist. Probably 120lbs overweight, does not control what she eats, drinks like a fish. I can tell she is somewhat active given how she carries it, but it is gross as fuck, and the denial is laughable (“I know men want me”). Always excuses, but thinks she’s God’s gift.
Stay healthy men. Watch what goes in, make sure to burn. Whatever works for you and is sustainable.

I imagine she lives in a city type environment where walking is normal but I could be wrong. If I am then, yeah walking sucks. I walked roughly 4 miles to work yesterday and it fucking sucked. Of course there are not many side walks on the way and it took me about an hour to get there. Was also carrying a backpack full of hand tools. Then after about 3 hours of work they sent me home. Once I finally got home I texted my supervisor to see if I should call him in the morning and see if here is any work for me before I walk up there because the walk really sucks. He responded by telling me they were letting me go. He said he would have told me in person but he didn’t want me to walk up there just to tell me I no longer worked there. They also don’t actually clock in and out at this place so I still have to go up there to fill out my time sheet. I fucking hate my life right now.
