Let's keep in mind that by "I prefer rich guys" really means "I prefer guys that look and spend like they're rich." In my experience the vast majority of people who look well off, are actually very deep in debt. They look well off, go to fancy places but everything is on credit. There's a saying in my family: it's the people who make 100k/year that look like they're millionaires: granite counter tops, German cars, expensive vacations and toys etc. The real millionaires look like your average Joe. My father has several multi millioniare friends and they all look like they're struggling for money. Decent looking, but it looks like they've had the same $10,000 car, the same clothes, house, furniture etc for 10+ years. But these were the guys who owned massive apartment complex units (like 100+ units) and were the ones who would donate in the 5 figures to church monthly.

What good is money if you aren't spending it?

There's actually a huge difference in the thought process of poor people, middle class, and wealthy people. Lots of research done on the attitudes people have on money too.
Very basic: Poor people spend money on things they don't need even when they need that money for necessities. Such as alcohol, ciggarettes, getting nails done, etc instead of food.
Middle class people tend to spend their money on depreciating things, and even on expensive toys that they really aren't into. Vacations, cars, motorcycles, top-quality stuff for hobbies they actually aren't interested in (like they'll spend 5 grand on golF clubs or something but then only play 1 round of golf every 3 years.)
The mentality of wealthy people generally is they live as minimally as possible, but direct their money to make more money. Things like rentals, mutual funds, ETF's, invest in themselves. Now with that being said they are more skeptical with money but when it comes to their hobbies/passions they will go all out. For example you'll see them complain how $50 a person for dinner is a rip off, but they'll easily go buy a camera lense for $5,000 and not feel guilty because photography is something they've done for years almost every week. Or some people will spend $10,000s on hiking equipment because they go hike every single week.
There's a huge difference in the mentality/view of money between different brackets. It's easy to dismiss it like "oh yeah wealthy people can afford it so of course..." but it's really much more complex than that.

Sigh. That mentality is like the blue pill mentality of finances lol. That's like the snowflake SJW thinking but for income. It completely misses the point and tries to redirect agency. Yes, it's extremely difficult to become a billionaire, but if you grow up in the USA and you do not have any out of the ordinary expense happen to you like medical debt or some car accident. It's literally your own fault if you don't retire as a millionaire. We live in a privileged world (those of us in the west) where the privilege is the consequences of good and bad decisions. Keep in mind most rich people (like 80%) are first generation and out of those like 50-60% became multi millionares on average salary. It's all about money habits which is what my post was about.
[–]mindhawk3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

that taught me that the america system is built for corporations, not people
if you dont have a corporation you are basically prey
99% of people in this country wouldnt know how to start a company, its not taught in school, its considered special knowledge
also 90% of the millionaires inherited at some point either their corporation or the money they used to start it
its deeply unfair and is how i would design a system if i wanted a steep pyramidal structure with a huge blob of prey at the bottom
when you see epstein with an 18 year old, you can bet her only shot at anything good in life come out of the end of his dick

I read the reviews on Amazon. Apparently the author got rich from Hawaiian real estate and wants people to invest in real estate so they will become rich the same way he did. Today, the housing market is in for another crash as the prices have recovered by a lot but the Chinese are buying just to hoard their wealth. He wants readers to save a lot but he is the same guy to wear Rolex watches and drive fancy cars just so that he can stick it the "rich kids" that didn't invite them to their fancy parties.

It's exactly what you wrote.
Small sample group, strange conclusions.
Do you realize this is an extremely strange thing to say about all rich people? And it is not really an indicator of why they're rich.
I feel like we should stay away from trying to find patterns in making money, and instead hone your mind to take good decisions everyday, instead of trying to crack some kind of formula.
But that might just be my experience and common sense speaking.

This is a hugely stereotypical and simplified view. Poor people don't spend money they need to spend on food on their nails. Poor people seem to spend way too much money on "needless" stuff is because they are poor. Basic stuff cost way more in relation to their total income, and basic stuff costs mostly the same for all people. It's the size of their income, that influences their spending habits. Let's calculate say in simple basic terms and numbers (very generic, not specific examples). For a poor person groceries for a week is 50$. Your rent for the week: 50$. Your monthly phone / internet bill: 50$. So a poor person, spends 1/3rd of their budget on "needless" things like mobile phones and internet apps? No, it's just that if you are middle class, you pay roughly the same portion of your budget on your groceries and rent (let's say about 2/3rds of your budget) but your "needless" like internet is not the remaining 3rd of your budget - it's like 5-10%. So you still have disposable income to spend on other stuff. Middle class people don't spend 5000$ on golf clubs each month. They can afford (or maybe they can't but the have credit cards) to spend such an amount, which is impossible to achieve by poor people, so they sometimes spend such an amount on their hobbies. One month it's 1/3rd of their paycheck on expensive clubs, the other is new appliance - let's say a fridge for the next 5 years. Next month it's some extra clothes, and some entertainment - more movies and eating out. Next month it could be some home repair project (maybe they call a specialist). Next month it's nothing - they are saving up to take their kids to disneyworld or something. All of this, is mostly stuff poor people cannot afford or have to buy it and take away from their other stuff. All three can be heavy drinkers. Poor person buys cheap alcohol and has nothing to eat this evening. Middle class person goes out to a bar, pays 5 times as much for their acohol, but still goes out and eats ad McDonalds instead of olive garden to save some cash and a rich person will buy very expensive alcohol, drink half and throw away the other half of the bottle, pay ridiculous prices for them, but their drinking will in no way hamper their spending on stuff like rent / groceries. Poor people will have to go into major debt, buy used hardware, wait for a bonus income (gifts from family, tax returns, extra work etc) to do stuff, middle class people can do on a monbthly basis. Rich people don't spend either 1/3rd of their budget on groceries (they buy better stuff, maybe spend 10 times as much as poor people, maybe 100 times more - but still, groceries are mostly the same products, rich people pay more for preparation, imported and luxury goods, but let's say pepsi costs as much for rich people as it does for middle class and poor people, but maybe rich people don't buy it by the gallon, so they may spend more, and they probably don't go to a cheaper store, or use coupons etc, but the basics are mostly the same. Cheese for poor people is 1.5$ a pack, cheese for rich people is 15$, but even poor people can afford higher quality cheese - those are the "ridiculous" and "excesive" money wasting of poor people - they spent 1/3rd of their grocery budget on fancy cheese, while they could easily do without it, or buy cheaper one, right? Rich people spent a fraction of their income on groceries, and rent, then another part of their income on investments, which both poor people and middle class people cannot afford, they spend extra amount on stuff that for other people may seem extravagant, but for rich people - those are trivial. If a poor person spends 100$ on shoes - they say it's extravagant and needles spending, walmart has shoes for 10$, and poor people should plan their budget right. If a middle class person spends 200$ on shoes - they say it's an expensive hobby, needles spending, but it only would be, if they actually spent that much every month on new shoes, and not once every six months or once a year. If a rich person spends 100$ dollars on shoes - people say they are saving money, buying smart, avoiding needles spending, even if they only wear those shoes once for a special occasion and never again, and they have already 10-20 pairs of shoes, for work, for home, for business meetings, evening, special occasions - some worth several times more than 100$, while a poor person may only own 1 pair of expensive shoes and 1 or 2 additional pairs - like for work, or special occasions (wedding, funerals) or even may rent such shoes. Middle class person will probably own 3-4 more pairs of shoes, or more, but some will be cheaper, some will be more expensive - like owning a good pair of work shoes, or good shoes for sports, or a special pair of shoes related to their hobby, and additional shoes for different weather etc. And while a poor person spent half their income on those shoes, middle class person spent 10% and rich person probably spent 0.000001% of their income - all they did , was buy a 100$ pair of shoes. Nothing more, nothing less. But we say that poor person did a bad thing, a middle class person should watch carefully to not go into bad spending habbits, and a rich person made a smart choice to save their money and not waste it. It's the same pair of shoes. The same kind of human feat wear it. Only thing different among them is their income - and that's supposed to reflect their spending habits or needs? No, it just reflects their income and how it affects their budget.
[–]ProyektZ0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You're not wrong but you missed my point. As I mentioned I was offering an extremely basic view. I guess what I was trying to say is the mentality that people have who became rich is vastly different than the mentality of people who are born rich or stay poor or middle class.
[–]Makonar0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't think your income magically influences your mentality. There are rich people who save every penny and rich people who spent ridiculous amount on extravagant stuff, there are poor people who have a large amounts of savings on their accounts, and poor people that are so deep in debt, their grandchildren will still be paying. It's not the income that makes rich people spend wisely and poor people spend poorly. It's on the individual. Sure, the circumstances of you growing up will greatly influence your future prospects - rich kids, usually don't end up poor adults and poor kids usually don't end up rich adults. Best outcome for poor people is to become middle class and worst outcome for rich people is to become less rich than their parents. Sure there are lucky poor people and unlucky rich people, but it's not like mentality of poor people is the only thing keeping them from becoming rich. Some people are not smart, not educated, not lucky, not ambitious, not affluent, not charismatic enough to actually make a difference. Some people are satisfied with what they have, and some are too scared to risk what little they have to try and be better. Here is a simple anecdotal example from my own family: my uncle worked 20 years for a company, that paid him shit and he had 3 kids so they were mostly poor, just barely scraping by. Suddenly, his company went under and fired him. He then got very lucky and landed a fantastic job at a new company, that instantly made them high middle class - being able to afford stuff he could never dream of. He had qualifications, but he was the sole provider of his family. He could not risk losing his regular job to look for better opportunities, since if he lost the income they had - the would not be able to afford rent and food. The loss of the job was a tragedy for him and his family - they were on the brink of becoming homeless - it's just luck, he happened to land a great job. It's not about their mentality - they were poor, but were always able to put food on their table, afford hobbies and take kids on vacations each year. They just didn't have anything above it. They would probably be happy with that - if the family is fed, clothed and taken for - all is well. It's only a coincidence that he suddenly became rich by his own standards basically overnight. It was not his metality, it was not due to wise spending and financial planning. They couldn't afford this before. Only after his new job, he was able to invest money, give his children better education, buy real estate in other cities and invest in his future. It's the income that changed them, not their mentality or money decisions.
It's crazy that you wrote so much, and that it's mostly irrelevant.
But it adds up.

Ideally you use it to invest in your offspring. You raise your sons and daughters with a good mindset and Protestant work ethic so they succeed in life. Nothing is given to you in this life; you must work hard for success.
This is unfortunately not easily attainable now like it was 100+ years ago. Our grandfathers worked hard as did our fathers. The destruction of the traditional nuclear family has made this all but unobtainable.
[–]garrulouslyglib0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Shit happens in life that you don't expect. People who have money can weather the storm. People who don't have money get swamped and never recover. Money is power to have a modicum of control over the world around you. Money is the freedom to fly away from the predators in the world and strike back when attacked. Money is the ability to tell people who try to control you to fuck off.
[–]DashneDK20 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah. There is a balance to be made of course. Don't go spending all your cash on a trip to Vegas. On the other hand, if you're too much of a miser, you're going to be saving money for the cat - which in this case is the state or some relative.
[–]jcazone0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There is nothing wrong on spending money! It's spending money that you'll have to pay 10% 20% or 30% just because you can wait to have what ever you want in life or what ever you girlfriend/wife wants. You could say I want a luxury German car even thought I can afford it or America/ Japanese sedan car that I can ???.

My ex-gf was like that and so was everyone in her family. (like her sisters, and even her friends.) They were all in 50k+ debt but had new cars like a Lexus IS700 but couldn't afford to feed their children. Literally they were all single parents going out every week spending 50 bucks on alcohol + the dinner. Then they would try to shame me for being weird or not normal because I wanted to stay home instead of spending money like that. They would constantly complain about not having enough money but they would constantly travel, go to shows/concerts or what have you...it just doesn't make sense.
Since I'm sort of venting I also want to point out how ridiculous it all was. They were all wannabe rich people. They all literally did their best to give off the vibe/perception that they were high class and definitely played that part well. It just didn't make sense. It's just weird because the people I know who actually do have money you will just never guess that they are multi millionaires. In fact, these people would probably look down on them based on just judging them on the clothes and cars they drive. (They wouldn't be invited to the house though.) But I guarantee if they saw their actual financial status they would probably start shuddering.
[–]JimmyPellen0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
and I'd bet that people who work for these (actual) millionaires could buy and sell people like your ex and her family.
They may be cooks, gardeners, landscapers, etc but they are paid well.

It is. It's called maff.
[–]JimmyPellen2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
no. Wildfireboat is right. Personal Finance is much different that just math. Budgeting, Savings, etc. A useful lifeskill many don't learn until much later in life, if they do at all.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Everything in your budget is based on very simple math. If you get paid every 2 weeks, you normalize the paycheck by multiplying by 30 days and then dividing by 14 days. If your net pay is $1000 per 14 days, it would be $2142 per 30 days. From there, subtract all of your fixed costs like car payments and mortgages. Then you subtract variable but necessary costs like food. What's left over is the discretionary budget. Discretionary spending can then be allocated into things like video games, dates, nice clothes, or savings.
When I was budgeting for a mortgage, I didn't even bother doing any of that. I downloaded the transactions from my bank, and I graphed a year worth of bank balances. The scatter plot from bottom left to top right shows the savings rate. Excel can do the trend line for me. The X axis was days, so it yielded a savings rate in $/day.
[–]wildfireboat2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The reason why I would require a personal finance class in my schools is to teach students the principles of a loan, interest, credit and debit. I would also emphasize a section on taxes; why we pay them, how we pay, when we pay, etc.
Later down the road, they may be more careful in voting for policies that decreases the amount earned in their paychecks.

Back in high school we had a girl a few grades behind me that was smoking hot. She was easily one of the hottest girls in school. Her little sister not so much. Little sister was average, but since she constantly got compared to hot sister, she seemed a lot worse than she actually was.
Fast forward a few years. Hot girl is approaching the wall, but she has a black kid. This being the south in the early 90's that's the end of her pulling a decent guy. Little sister hit her stride and while she still didn't ever look as hot as hot girl did, she was decent, and at that point in time she was getting more male attention than hot girl. Hot girl started trying to police little sister at that point, with predictable results.
Also, the absolute malice that many of the less hot female siblings have for their physically attractive siblings is amazing.

Being taken care, protected, and provided for, or supported in your own endeavors, with and infinite option to completely opt-out of the partnership and still retain benefits, being offered partnership, companionship, love till death do you apart.
