Next time a woman says we need more girls in STEM, ask her what she studied. She will say not STEM.

Why is there an absolute NEED for more women in STEM? The only thing that should matter is that you have the proper qualifications and skills to perform the job.
[β][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 8 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
We need more people in STEM in general. It seems like girls are often discouraged to pursue STEM, and anyone being discouraged is a bad thing.
[β]Jcart10523 points24 points25 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Evidence that women are discouraged from STEM? If anything, the existence of the abundance of scholarships dedicated for women to pursue STEM thoroughly debunks this.
[β]amd64-4 points-3 points-2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
There is actually evidence of the opposite: https://www.thejournal.ie/gender-equality-countries-stem-girls-3848156-Feb2018/
[β]Chaos_Eclipsed4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
The article in question doesn't mention women in gender-equal countries being 'discouraged' despite lower rates of women in STEM in those countries compared to less equal countries.
Instead, it suggests that the extended economic opportunites are what is driving women away, despite the stability and succes STEM fields often bring.
"STEM careers are generally secure and well-paid but the risks of not following such a path can vary. In more affluent counties, where any choice of career feels relatively safe, women may feel able to make choices based on non-economic factors."
"Conversely, in counties with fewer economic opportunities, or where employment might be precarious, a well-paid and relatively secure STEM career can be more attractive to women."
It does mention that "Despite extensive efforts to increase participation of women in STEM, levels have remained broadly stable for decades" as well as βItβs important to take into account that girls are choosing not to study STEM for what they feel are valid reasons,β
Whatever the cause of the gender discrepency is, it's not women being discouraged from STEM. They are actively choosing other paths in life. Unless you want to go full totalitarian, you can't change someone else's choice. You might not agree with their choices, but you can't make the choice for them.
Whatever is going on with women and STEM fields, I'm afraid you are the exception and not the rule.
[β]amd644 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[β]holmes20209 points10 points11 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
There is no way that girls are discouraged from STEM. Maybe that was true decades ago. Now it's the complete opposite. And it's a good choice for women. Companies will currently fall over themselves to hire female scientists and engineers. Where I work, given two roughly similar applications, we would hire the women, even if she's slightly worse than other male applicants. It would help our gender ratios.

I have been in STEM for 35 years. I have literally never seen or heard a woman discouraged from pursuing STEM. Quite the opposite. We have endless debates on how to encourage more women into STEM.
Already back in the 80s my college physics department had a formal system in place to interview women who left the department to try and figure out how we could prevent it from happening.

Dont pull that "we are individuals" bullshit argument. Pointing out individual examples doesn't negate the big statistical difference overall. If someone said "most people like music", youd be an idiot if you responded "some people don't like music" in an attempt to rebuttal the claim that most people like music. Sure, there are some people that dont like music, but that doesnt change the fact that most people do indeed like music. Similarly, you pointing out a few relationships where smart girls are with non chads doesn't change the fact that most smart girls (and just girls in general) prefer chads.
Btw, you repeated your claim. "Non chads in relationships with smart girls" and "smart girls in relationships with non chads" both mean the same thing. Your point was so weak that you had to make it sound like you had two counter points when you only had one.
[β][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Not really. Smart girls typically prefer a smart chad in my experience.

I have a masters in math and Iβm also a woman. I think we need more women in STEM. But women tend to opt out of working with guys like those in this thread.
[β]Varrick20161 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Thank you for improving the fate of humanity. Iβm being serious. Each extra person in STEM pushes our civilization forward.
I also guarantee the easiest way to dramatically increase womenβs participation in STEM is to get rid of bullshit majors like feminist dance therapy etc. the rate of women in engineering may only go up to 10%-15% but thatβd be a 500%-700% increase.
Would also dramatically improve the overall academic health of American higher education.
[β]Jcart1053 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Women don't so STEM, because the grand majority of them simply are not intelligent enough for it β not necessarily because they have too many options given to them and/or they have no interest in the topic.
[β]Varrick2016-1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Iβm saying that the smaller percentage that are intelligent enough for it but who waste their talents on basket weaving majors would largely be forced to choose a STEM majors and therefore dramatically increase the number of women in STEM.
Overall STEM enrollment might only increase 10%-15% but due to the extremely low number of women right now in STEM the percentage increase would be 500%-700% and due to network effects on information sharing and compounding the positive effect on the STEM fields would be huge.
Better yet the rapid drain and destruction of the humanities departments would dramatically increase the overall academic health of the American higher education system. Could you imagine major America universities with massive STEM departments and nary a humanities major in sight? This is an achievable dream.
[β][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Thank you for the compliment! Iβm trying to do my best!
Iβm not sure if that would be the easiest way to increase women in STEM. I would imagine that the people who would be in the majors you mentioned would find other things to pursue, with those things not necessarily being STEM.
Of course thereβs not an easy answer, but I think that itβs our cultureβs attitudes towards woman in STEM thatβs the problem, whether intentional or not. For example, women in STEM majors are shown to view themselves as less competent at what they do than men who are just as successful. Also, itβs shown that there are an equal amount of young girls and young boys who are interested in science, but girls become less interested when they are older, which I think implies that there is something in our culture that is discouraging them to pursue their scientific interests vs. them not having a natural curiosity.
[β]Pellaeon_redpill0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women's self-worth isn't judged by how much money they make, so there is less incentive to overcome the difficulty. Hot guys don't give a fuck about their degree, so extra effort in a challenging degree is less effort spent on attracting hot guys(Ugly guys don't care either but that's not relevant to women's decision making). Women fiercely compete for the hottest guys, so they find anything they can use sabotage each other's self-confidence - labeling them for purusing a male dominated field is one of them.
These are all contributors. Concluding "it must be the patriarchy" is wishful thinking.

Now it's not STEM anymore. It's STEAM. The A is for Arts. The Womyns couldn't handle tought subjects like math or science, so as usual we've now lowered the standards to include the "Arts". Cuz hey man Calculus and Painting is equally hard you know?
[β]Scatre25 points26 points27 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I remember they were trying to push that shit in my college; some steam club started and they invited a bunch of stem majors, probably because they want a piece of that STEM glory. I decided to show up for the giggles. Weird how I was one of the only stem majors (and male) there.
They argued "stem needs more art, and we could incorporate more stem into art!". Yea cause I'm sure all the art majors are excited to take signal processing and differential equations when the most math they've done is a pre-calc class (MAYBE, I'm not even sure if they're to do even that).
As if mathematics and engineering has 0 creativity or "artistic" aspects about it. Shits already art, it's just a sophisticated form of art that actually has value. But yea, it's not drinking and smoking everyday, seeking inspiration to finally make that painting or a song that will totally change the world. It's trying to understand things that giants before you have already mastered, trying to create something that requires hours of tedious bullshit. It's spending all night alone at your desk while everyone else is out partying.
Nah, I'm just fucking with ya, I would get hammered like every other day; dog-shit gpa, but hey, at least I'm not working at starbucks with student loans up the ass you fucking retards. Imagine taking out a loan to get an ART degree, how deluded would anyone have to be to do that?
Anyways, I was pretty triggered.

[β]CreatrixAnima1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
They put arts in there because of the well-known association between art and excelling in math. Whether itβs the geometry of some visual arts, or the connection between doing well in music and doing well in math, putting an emphasis on the arts helps students to achieve in mathematics. Itβs nothing to do with gender at all.
I think that's pretty narrow-minded of you, I don't care if it's STEM or STEAM or whatever but art is hard and I think it's important. If you have the right drive and intellectual capacity you could make the most out of a degree. It's not just painting and sculpture, I personally couldn't give a shit about most gallery exhibitions but film, illustration, computer graphics, typography, music... these aren't things you're just born with, it takes a long time to learn how to do them.

I remember going to a "women in stem" celebration in college. They made up like 20% of the engineering class if i recall correctly. Most were dogshit, but some were actually pretty fucking bright (they usually had other negative characteristics about them though).
They were all patting themselves on the back like they overcame some hardship. I thought "what's the implication, here?". Are they admitting that women have some sort of disability or something? Engineering's hard, even for men. We just do shit that's hard more often than women do.
Whenever a woman starts to brag about her degree I usually just ask which of the soft sciences she majored in. They tend to shut up pretty quickly after that.

I honestly finally believe the reason women do STEM less is the effort. Many of the IQ studies show that we are equal in that regard albeit with maybe a different distribution.
My view is that it's effort and they have some predisposition that they do not need to. Men do a lot of "unfun" things because they "need" to be responsible and handle things. While women are quick to tell us it's not that way anymore, I don't agree. Legally we are still required to pay it all, we are still always at fault.
Give people easier options and they will take them, even if they are fully capable. Why wouldn't someone have fun if they could? I get so annoyed at all the comments from these womens groups about how important it is. All they do is talk and damn near none of them have STEM degrees or even fucking work in STEM!
Also, the very few colleagues I have had in STEM that happen to be female actually do something about it. One does mentoring and one does a free school. Not a lot of takers either and those folks don't really complain a lot about it either. They don't have any victim mentality.
So few women take STEM and now we must "do something" well it's fucking simple people, if women want more STEM they can simply do more STEM. EASY!
[β]ManGoingtoTOWn2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Apologies for posting this again but so relevant to the whole "we must get more women in STEM" argument. The more freedom women have to choose what to do (e.g. In the more gender equal west), the less they choose to go into STEM, paradoxically in countries with less gender equality (India, Middle East etc) far more women in tech. gender equality stem paradox
