Speaking from self-experience, this is 100% accurate. Put my own self on the back burner for a marriage that ended, and now 32 years old left without a career, a degree or any kind of improvement in my life, when my ex has benefitted from our marriage immensely and turned his life 180 degrees (thanks to me).

I allowed that to happen and hate myself for it. Now it will take me YEARS to fix this shit and thanks to FDS I’m not letting ANYONE get in the way of me bettering myself from now on. Putting myself 1st, 2nd and 3rd is my new way of life!

I started questioning if I wanted to finish a 3rd degree because this dude was saying all the right things and talking long term plans that would included moving about 1500 miles away. Started to have doubts in him and what he was offering. Sadness can wait till after in done leveling up

100% my life experience! Dated this guy for 5 years (all through college). When I graduated we spoke about moving out of state to pursue new opportunities on the east coast. During those 5 years he would say yes to shut me up, and when the time came he started backing out. Saying we would find opportunities here, and there was no need to leave.

So I bought a 1 way plane ticket without telling him. 3 days before I left I told him I was moving, and I broke up with him at the same time. &That was 4 years ago. Now I’m in my dream career living in Europe, and he’s doing the same damn thing we were doing as kids in college.

I told my ex I was going to back to school and instead of being supportive of my goals, he told me to take online classes because he was worried I'd meet someone new and leave him. Joke's on him though. I left him because of his selfishness and low self esteem; no outside man needed.

Here's where he got me to stay longer. He would always encourage me or help me to some extent with my goals but spend more time on that than doing his own goals. He just used my goals as a way of procrastinating and not working on himself. Basically now he can blame me for any failures on his part. He would also encourage me to go to more things that I like.... But go on my own....
