Reality Bites was THE film of the 90s. Sadly, it groomed women into believing slacker types were cool and boyfriend worthy. It has taken me 20 years to realise Ethan Hawke's character was a SCROTE.

But LoL oh no. Do you have a problem with me? Do you not think I’m cool? Meanwhile Winona’s character is crapping all over the effort she put into her date night.

I just binge watched My So Called Life and holy hell Jordan Catalano was such a scrote! And poor Angela was completely infatuated with him she couldn’t see it. He kept her a secret, eventually broke up with her because she wouldn’t have sex and then used her as a therapist constantly after when they were just friends.

Man that flick did not age well for me. Homegirl had her tuition paid, pops gave her a paid for car and spotted her a credit card. She had Ben Stiller in his 20’s and was BF with Janine Garofalo then she shipwrecks herself over a dusty ass, stale beer smelling jag? With a squished face? Girl you need to get it together.

I could only watch the first 2 minutes🤢 1. Ethan’s character is rude to a potential suitor- why would you be “friends” with a man who acts this territorial or just plain unpleasant with strangers?! 2. Ethan insults her choice of dress and then gaslights her by telling her to “think for herself”. 3. Haven’t seen whole movie but I like that Ben Stiller’s character calls out the passive aggressive behavior. Would have been optimal if he had said “do not talk to her like that”. 4. It got extra cringey when she tries to calm down Ben Stiller- the man who is actually showing respect to her to effectively protect King Scrote. I stopped watching at that point. Let grown men handle it themselves. Sis should have walked out the door and taken herself to dinner.

Notice how Ben Stiller's character initially appears to be sticking up for Winona, but then it becomes obvious what he cares about is Ethan Hawke not thinking he's cool. He's basically angry he doesn't have Ethan Hawke's approval. And then his killer comeback is "well at least I get to fuck her and you don't". Yikes.

He was a horrible scrote. A better counterpart is the movie "Singles." Kyra Sedgwick played a young woman getting her bearings & becoming independent, Bridget Fonda played the classic pickme for Matt Dillon's douchebag rocker character, Kyle Campbell played a relatively hvm from what I recall. It was a good snapshot of the grunge era in Seattle with a fantastic soundtrack.

I'm late leaving this but I Saw What You Did podcast made an episode about this movie and The Way We Were. The theme was Fuckboys. (Episode 6)

Its a really funny podcast. I don't think it breaks and FDS rules. The 2 girls are quite empowering actually. Its my new favorite podcast.

Too funny!!! I watched this movie a few months back because it was one of my favorites back in the ‘90’s and the very first thing I thought about was what an asshole Ethan Hawke’s character, Troy, was. Such a prick! Like when he stays up late to give Winona shit about sleeping with Michael??? Teaches that there’s double standards for men and that they’re allowed to be total assholes. Hindsight 20/20? Fuck that movie.
