On the one hand its lower test, on the other hand corporate jobs don't allow actual conflict so everybody spends all day repressing it. Saying how you actually feel about someone would get you fired, stuck in a dead end job, or sent to HR for a 'chat'.

Dude there is always going to be some level of gossip and whining about people in any social situation. But workplaces accentuate this because if the person you’re bitching about is your boss, you can’t really do anything about it, can you? Your hands are tied at work as far as real confrontation is concerned, especially with your superiors, so things turn more covert and gossipy, or as you put it - how females deal with conflict. It’s a matter of circumstance and letting off steam in the only way possible.

A few years ago I noticed that my Lunch groups discussions are like this. What opened my eyes was that the same rounds of insults would get routinely repeated.

Dont go into it. One thing you can do is change the subject and ask questions.

I used to struggle with accepting this as well. It was hard for me to swallow. Happens in college and grad school as well.

Get used to it and stop giving a fuck. It will take time but eventually it will have zero impact on you.

It's very common, and yes. The real world is like that. My brother (now in his 40's) and his friends whom are roughly the same age also do this. So it's nothing new. Even my old group of friends were like this, gossiping I mean. Same when I was in collage and pretty much everywhere I've been in life I've encountered this. It's one of the reasons I don't bother getting involved with groups of new people. Because I see it a mile off and instantly switch off zzzzzzz

Those are just passive aggressive people. They’re afraid of conflict, so they express their frustration in an indirect way. It’s nothing new. These types of people have always existed.

I disagree with the other commenters in terms of a work environment. Because of feminism / equality BS and everyone getting offended at tinniest BS you need to act a certain way. Yes, act. Do you think your performance matters much in most businesses? Maybe if you work in wall street, are a stock broker which makes it trivial to access your impact in terms of money. But some random office drones like most employees? Nope. What matters is how other people feel about you, especially our superiors. But peers complaining about you won't help with that.

it has nothing to do with conflict but with being smart. Of course gossiping isn't smart and should not be done. Kissing ass, fake smile, acting is basically mandatory in any normal office environment. I agree though that gossiping should be kept minimal.

My thoughts on this is that the most healthiest, effective, energetic working environments are those of smaller size. 2-5 employees.

I worked at different warehouse / production departments for a few years after HS and I remember it being like this. It was before TRP so I lost frame a few times and probably gossiped myself as well.

Overall the work place will always be like this. When you're just waiting on the clock, people will start drama to help time pass faster.

Even executive and professional positions are more political and passive power plays. It's not ghetto gossip but a different type of power talk and overall just another reason l why you should always STFU, keep your head down, and get your work done when it comes to your income.
