Would you ever buy an electric vehicle?

As much as I love driving (when it's not friggin' high traffic, so very rarely), I cant wait for the day that autonomic vehicles replace human drivers, the amount of intensity and anger on the road is so damn high.

I will miss driving, but I can see myself enjoying more being able to lay back and relax while transporting.

I think driving electric is where we will all be some day. However a few things from your post still out for me.

Electric vehicles are not pollution free. Even if all the power was replaced with green energy the manufacturing of green energy solutions is hardly green and I many cases worse than conventional energy sources.

Many materials used in solar cells are carsegenic. Wind power kills birds by the thousands.

What is it with this mentality that rich people are evil? I don't get it, have known and current know many rich people. The vast majority of then are kind and generous with their resources. Sure some are dicks. I think that distribution is about the same across all social classes.

Power generation is neither moral nor immoral any more that the sun is, which provides for all life on this planet. Too much sun is damaging to humans, plants and animals (in broad terms).

I see conventional vs. green energy as merely a cost - benefit scenerio. That is my 2 cents.

At least where I live, our electricity comes from oil-burning stations. So..you are still burning oil, indirectly.

And..good luck replacing those batteries when they wear out. Average cost--$15,000.

You're only focusing on the rich executives, which can be done for any industry. Keep in mind millions of families have homes because of the jobs created by the oil industry and the supporting industries like steel, concrete, manufacturing, chemical companies, etc. You've been driving and flying across the country and world because of oil, have plastic products, benefit from technologies that use plastic and chemicals derived from oil, get your groceries and Amazon products that were delivered with diesel and gasoline by large trucks that can't run on alt energy, etc. Mostly, I know a lot of families who rely on the industry, directly and indirectly.

I'm pro alternative energy, but I also believe in looking at the bigger picture and giving credit where it's due.

To answer your question, I'd like to buy an electric motorcycle since my day to day transportation is done on a motorcycle. I'd then use my truck on long road trips and when hauling stuff. I have solar panels on my house, so I'd essentially commute daily for free, except the cost of the bike and tires.

Man, now I feel like lookong at some electric bikes again.

A family member has a Tesla. It's way cool. The important thing is they have a good network of charging stations across the USA, so you can easily drive across the country. It can take something like 2 hours to fully recharge, but that's no big problem. If you're driving across country, you can stop to have a meal while your car charges. What I hope is that all electric cars end up with the same charging standards so that there's one charging network for all electric cars and each car manufacturer doesn't have to have its own network.

I have an electric vehicle, Tesla Model X. No regrets, not going back. This vehicle is for transportation.

I also have an old Toyota MR2 which I am going to replace with a < 1980 Porsche 911. This vehicle is for driving.

I love driving as much as the next man, but I dislike transportation.

I welcome autonomous vehicles with all my heart, the I can rather spend my time when doing transportation on something useful.

In the future, actual driving will be a hobby like boating is today. And when the day comes, with good weather. I will pull the T-top off, pull on the driving gloves and go have a nice relaxing drive while listening to the engine droning behind me and feeling my body interact with the mechanics of the car (too much electronics in modern cars imho).

I would, driving them is a joy. But you cannot travel far. Ideally, I'd have two cars, the electric one for going to work and buying groceries and a gas powered car in case my destination is farther away. This situation is not that uncommon in my life.

One issue is availability. Gasoline simply is available everywhere, electric "stations" aren't.

Second, it takes time to recharge your car.

Third, electric cars don't have the power of gasoline cars.

Fourth, if the electricity is power that's converted from fossil fuels (like gasoline), then there will be no way that the price of "electric gasoline" will ever be lower than just plain gasoline. But if it's converted from solar, then yes it could be cheaper. But that brings us back to the third point, power...

Now, a hybrid car does address some of these issues.

I can’t wait to buy a Tesla. It’s pretty much my next purchasing goal.

I’ll get solar panels on my house (with battery storage) and charge the car that way, further reducing the cost of ownership.

Electric cars can be very economical, they’re clean (depending on how you charge them), and the require so much less maintenance than combustion vehicles.

I absolutely can’t wait.

Yes, EVs are so efficent, except for how 3x more pollution is produced in the production of an electric car than a normal care would burn in its entire life. So it's already a net negative for the environment before you even drive it off the lot.

Buying an electric vehicle is socially irresponsible. The power needed to recharge the vehicle has to come from a power generating station. Said generating station may use Coal, Natural Gas, Hydro, or Nuclear. There is Wind and Solar but they are statistically insignificant in output when compared to the conventional sources.

This means you are most likely exporting the consequences of your power consumption to someplace else. Thus you are saving nothing in terms of pollution. Just inflicting your pollution on someone else living in proximity to the generating station. Those suffering your pollution are much more likely to be poorer and less able to protect themselves from its deleterious effects.

Electric vehicles are immoral.

Yes, its cleaner and with auto driving vehicles will make it safer. Don't get me wrong, I love driving a big ass 7.3 F350 but, electric vehicles mainstream would be better. I can take my truck down a back round and shit. But going to work would be way better.
