“Allegedly”...smh

[–]No_Construction_896 55 points56 points57 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I think it’s pretty safe to say we can remove that word.

Why do people care so much about high school popularity? I can see the kids but the mom....???

[–]Nagi21 15 points16 points17 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean it’s less about the what they accessed and more that they accessed a bunch of private records to do so. Although the murderettes are still worse.

Person of color

[–]CoachOcelot 131 points132 points133 points 5 years ago (38 children) | Copy Link

A somehow-less-racist way of saying "coloured person". If you just swap the words around and add "of"... voilà! You're no longer saying something racist!

I hate that phrase. It's the result of white people tiptoeing around the race issue and tripping over themselves in the end. Just call me black.

[–]allcommiesarebad 63 points64 points65 points 5 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

They somehow decided it was less racist because when you say “colored person” you’re referring to their color first, but when you say “person of color”, you’re referring to them being a person first.

It’s retarded.

[–]ZestyMordant 22 points23 points24 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But it's perfectly okay to say 'white people'.

[–]CoachOcelot 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's okay to say "black people" as well. I'm talking about getting offended at one specific combination of words, but not the same combination, just rearranged.

Don't take everything as a personal insult if you can help it.

[–]FourthBar_NorthStar 43 points44 points45 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]jacksarmy 17 points18 points19 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

We don't say retarded anymore, mentally challenged.

In the future they will ban the Spanish word for black and change the name of a country in West Africa

[–]CoachOcelot 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A South American football player got banned for three games, fined £100,000, and "re-educated" for calling a good, close friend "negrito" in his own language, because it was deemed "racist"... by people who don't even speak the language natively. The actual connotation is akin to "little brother".
Unfortunately a true story.

[–]_TwoBirds_ 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It’s not completely inclusive, apparently, because the new term BIPOC has become normal, too.

[–]_TwoBirds_ 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There’s a very similar conversation in the disability community, as well. For example, some people prefer “autistic person” while others prefer “person with autism”. Just like this example and with pronouns, if I hear your preference, I’m going to try my hardest to stick with that language. If I don’t pick it up, then I’ll ask your preference. And when I mess up, I’ll apologize, correct myself, and keep the conversation moving.

Sure, I still feel awkward using different language than what I’ve been told is “PC” but that does not matter. My focus is to respect your choice.

[–]illusum 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Try that excuse at your job, especially a high level corporate and see how fast your ass lands in jail, unless you're rich enough to fight in court of course.

Pretty sure the mom is going to have trouble finding employment for a long, long time.

But the simple reality is the teenage daughter is likely to spend a comparable time in jail that the privileged PoC who literally killed a totally innocent man commiting a violent felony will. And, as he lay bleeding to death on the ground, ignored him and cared only about her smashed cell phone.

This is more like “teenpass” - the girls are 13 and 15 and it looks like they’ll be pleading to second degree murder. Not seeing anything about “no jail time.”

[–]Lakechrista 13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

'will allow them to avoid prison time altogether'

[–]NewYorkJewbag 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I saw that in only one of the stories that came up. I’d imagine that means they’ll serve in juvenile detention.

[–]Smacky_Da_Frog 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

And homecoming queen candidates are adults?

[–]NewYorkJewbag 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I think it wouldn’t be very hard to cherry pick numerous examples of white girls getting slaps on the wrist. This happens to be an anomaly.

[–]Smacky_Da_Frog 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I think that the whole point is that there is no actual racial bias in the system, just people perceiving racial bias because of their personal beliefs. And it works both ways of course. Everybody thinks the system treats them worse and that they have more obstacles.

Now, where does the System actually spend money to give specific groups a "boost?" See, we're not such a bad country after all. But some people see a cute puppy and others look at the same thing and see a snarling beast, I suppose.

[–]NewYorkJewbag 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

“is America good or bad” type discussions aren’t super productive, because they lack any kind of nuance. America has done great things and America has done awful things. We can celebrate the great while acknowledging the terrible, right?

On the matter of the criminal justice system, if you look at the actual statistics, rather than this anecdotal examples like this post, it’s pretty hard not to see racial bias embedded in the system.

Let’s take murder convictions as an example. The advent of DNA evidence has shed a great deal of light on the imbalances in the system. Here’s a good wrap up on the subject from The Innocence Project:

https://innocenceproject.org/facts-racial-discrimination-justice-system-wrongful-conviction-black-history-month/

You’ve probably heard of TIP, but if not, they’ve been on the forefront of overturning wrongful convictions using DNA evidence.

Here’s a key highlight:

Innocent Black people are seven times more likely to be wrongfully convicted of murder than innocent white people.

This fact, specifically, speaks volumes. You can imagine that if this is the case for murder convictions, then for other types of convictions (drug charges, for example) it wouldn’t be surprising to find that black and Hispanic people are more likely to be incarcerated for the same crime vs a white person:

Stop for a minute and just contemplate this. If you are falsely accused of murder, being white makes it 7x more likely that you WON’T be convicted.

On the matter of who the government gives money to, I’d ask you to consider who are the main beneficiaries of tax benefits and so-called corporate welfare. If you step back you may see that the imbalance is not quite what you think it is.

[–]Smacky_Da_Frog 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm absolutely not worried at all about America's goodness or badness through the lens of history, because that's just silly. What was perfectly moral and upright behavior and belief in the past is no longer such, but that's just social evolution.

No, I'm talking about the snapshot that is the United States of America today. Right now, America is a fantastic place to live for people of all races, colors, creeds, religions, and so forth. If it's such a bad place that we need to burn shit down to blow away the system entirely, then why the heck are so many people so eager to come here? Obviously people are looking at a rosy-sweet nation through crap-colored glasses here.

The Innocence Project thing is another discussion entirely. I don't think that Reddit is a good forum for discussing these topics because of the possibility of senseless rancor, though. Because we would also have to talk about differential crime statistics, and that is a hotbutton issue for sure. Probably best to just let that dog lay there.

[–]NewYorkJewbag 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Is it possible that the snapshot you’re talking about is not universal?

[–]Smacky_Da_Frog 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Things don't have to be universal to be holographic you know. :p

[–]NewYorkJewbag 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Saywhatnow?

[–]notnotjamesfranco 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The other girl is probably 17

Edit: at most 17 if they are talking about trying her as an adult

[–]NewYorkJewbag 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The two girls are 13 and 15 and plead to murder. The 17 year old and her family chose to go trial. Perhaps if she’d plead out things would be different.

You’d have to be deeply retarded to believe that white people are treated WORSE by America’s criminal justice system. A brief review of the most cursory statistics will show you that POC, particularly black people, are punished more frequently, more harshly, and more falsely, than whites for the same crime. This is incredibly well documented.

[–]notnotjamesfranco 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You have to be retarded to think I said that

[–]Lost_in_hindsight -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Looseforbiden 27 points28 points29 points 5 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

You missed the point. They’re being tried as juveniles. They won’t serve jail time.

[+]EatsCtrl-V -19 points-18 points-17 points 5 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

The 13 year old can’t even legally be tried as an adult in DC. As for the 15 year old it’s up to the prosecutor and apparently it’s a huge burden because they have to show that there’s no hope for rehabilitation. If she was 16 or 17 it’d be a different story.

I know you wanna just make this about their race though so w/e

[–]VIIIMan 24 points25 points26 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Personally, I think that if you kill someone, there's no point in rehabilitation. A person is dead because of your actions. The time for rehabilitation is long passed.

[–]EatsCtrl-V 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I mean it’s just DC law not my opinion. Apparently it’s what the judge wants before they give the go ahead for the prosecutor to charge a 15 year old as an adult. The prosecutor needs to supply the proof that the defendant has no hope of rehabilitation

[–]VIIIMan 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I feel you, dude. What's done is done. I am just stating my opinion. As far as I'm concerned, the murder of someone trumps everything else. As far as I'm concerned, they need to be locked up for the entirety of their lives. A man is dead because of them. It's not like they didn't know any better. I don't think they intended to kill him but to me, it doesn't matter. They did and they should pay for it.

[–]woahThatsOffebsive 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't disagree, but it does make the race comparison you're using kind of pointless, given the age differences between the two cases.

[–]VIIIMan -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I never brought race up. Their race is irrelevant.

[–]woahThatsOffebsive -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh whoops, thought you were OP for some reason

[–]Looseforbiden 12 points13 points14 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you have always believed that everyone should play by the same rules and be judged by the same standards, that would have gotten you labeled a radical 60 years ago, a liberal 30 years ago and a racist today. - Thomas Sowell

Or I could just be a self flagellating POC. Who knows

[–]EatsCtrl-V 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yea judge them by the same standards and what not but it’s DC law that prevents the 13 and 15 year old girls from being charged as adults and it’s Florida law that allows the 17 year old girl to be charged as an adult.

I won’t say that I agree with the charges or sentences but putting these two stories side by side like this and saying it’s a POCpussypass is ridiculous
