Look into "school to prison pipeline"

Many young men are basically groomed to be a prison bitch from a very young age. We are told over and over that basically everything we do is going to land us in prison to such a degree that we just accept that we aren't going to college or even the workforce, but to prison. With, "I'm going to prison" as a foregone conclusion, why bother trying to get grades for college or even graduate. These where not presented as actual options, "I'm going to prison". With "I'm going to prison" as just an assumed, why bother trying to avoid it. There doesn't look to be much of a difference between sexual advances, sexual harresment and sexual assault, not when anything sexual get you told "Your going to prison for that", I'm going to prison anyways.

This is often framed as a racial problem because it affects black boys dramatically more than it affects white boys, but it's mostly a gender issue where it affects almost exclusively boys.

I mean they just study, I remember most of the other guys in my class were just fooling around in high school. A really small number of them made it to college. Some of them although capable just didn’t want to go there.

Now, to actually give you the answer you were looking for, the reason why there are more women in university - as well as why women, in general, do better at schooling; can primarily be narrowed down to three overencompassing answers.

The first is the most obvious answer, this being affirmative action. Most universities possess a plethora of scholarships aimed at getting women into higher education, especially STEM education. Originally these scholarships were implemented in a time where men were the overwhelming majority of the students. Unfortunately these scholarship programmes now remain in place even though they aren't really needed as most women no longer need specialised programes to get them into higher education and learning. However, due to the current political climate, there is no real influence behind implementing affirmative action programs aimed at men solely for the purpose of getting more men into university and the idea of removing the effectively defunct scholarship programs isn't tolerable in the current climate - as it'll just result in negative publicity for the university institutions that remain in-place. That said, there are a great many scholarship programs that a great many men can get themselves into, it just so happens that none of them are exclusive to men.

The second answer is that a great many men are simply not interested in higher education and learning, but rather, are more interested in taking on a trade. Unlike a great many other good-paying occupations, a university degree is not necessary to get a trade. As a result a lot of men who are interested in being electricians, plumbers, builders, what have you won't go to university; but rather, will go through apprenticeships and become employed tradespeople. As a result the amount of men at university compared to women will always be skewed as a university degree is pretty much a must have for anyone to get a good paying job.

The third answer is that male students struggle through primary and secondard schooling while female students excell. This occurs because the schooling system is, in general, inadvertantly tailored towards female behaviour as opposed to male behaviour. What is meant by this is that the desired gold-star behaviour expected and encouraged by schools is behaviour that is more often that not comes more naturally for girls than it does for boys. This is one of the core arguments that leading Feminist Christina Hoff Sommers outlines in her 2000 work The War Against Boys. One such example of how the schooling system works against boys is by punishing typical male behaviour by labelling it as disruptive, problematic, and disrespectful. Innocent male behaviour such as playful roughhousing is in the majority of causes seen as indistinguishable from violent altercations, banter between male friends which takes the form of friendly piss-taking is often labelling as bullying. As a result of the schooling system being tailored this way boys struggle more than girls in schooling and either tend to drop out in larger numbers or graduate with lower results than most girls do.

So, as an TL;DR, the reason why we see more women in univeristy than men is because of affirmative action, male interests, and a female-orientated schooling system.
