The easiest way to deal with people is bring up the fact that 80% of teachers are women. When they say "Maybe men just don't want to be teachers" you laugh and hope the irony of their words hits them.

If all of your expensive education has led you to the job title of Social Media Intern, then real jobs probably all look like dress-up to you, or like stock photos with diverse sets of models, all interchangeable, for whom becoming a doctor is as easy as putting on a stethoscope.

Apart from the joke being merely a joke... there's a bit of truth in the statement, too.

If you look at which-types of specialization men & women choose-- within the categories of "Doctor" "Engineer" or "CEO"... you'll find more men choosing higher-paying subsets/ vs. women choosing lower-paying options.

Exactly. But:

CEOs: more in service industry, smaller companies;

Doctors: more into GP, dermatology and psychiatry than neurosurgery;

Engineers: more into biological engineering and laboratory work than leading petroleum exploration missions on open sea.

So what is the issue? The answer is obvious. Get women to go into petroleum engineering and neurosurgery. No reasonable person is opposed to that, right?
