Men didn’t have privilege. They had trade offs where’d they’d be expected to die first in a scenario like this.
[–]boringcarpets 17 points18 points19 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
An expectation that still exists

.... and afterwards the Suffragettes bitched about the lady survivors having to watch the ship go down.

SUFFRAGETTES DENY CHIVALRY ON TITANIC; " Women First" Is the Universal Rule, Says Sylvia Pankhurst, and This Is No Exception. Special Cable to THE NEW YORK TIMES.APRIL 21, 1912

It probably should be noted there were two movements. The suffragette and the suffragist.
The Parkhurst's were connected with the former, and could be classified as terrorists for their tactics (bombing buildings, trying to tie a flag on the Kings' horse carriage). They were given lenient sentences which were reduced further when they went on a hunger strike, a few of which committed suicide because they were force fed - - there was a Guardian article that pointed out several deaths but excluded cause).
And reporting standards probably go back as far as the first newspaper. Mrs Cecil Chapman was the president of the New Constitutional Society for Women’s Suffrage.
It excludes that fact and it reads as if she was a suffragette.

Women First" Is the Universal Rule, Says Sylvia Pankhurst, and This Is No Exception.
My understanding is that the practice began in 1852. Barely 60 years old at the time of the Titanic going down. Women weren't really present in large numbers at sea before steamships made mass passenger travel possible. But, hey, certain all-new patriarchal traditions are too good to do away with!

I don't even understand what the hell Pankhurst was arguing. She was saying there was no "special" female privilege on the titanic because it's already the norm anyway? Or something?
[–]fengpi 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's not a privilege, she was arguing, it's just the way things ought to be and always should be. Why, it is not a privilege for a stone to roll downhill, is it? It's the natural order.
[–]DavidByron2 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
If you break down the figures by class it looks like "female" was treated as a class difference.
[–]Clemicus 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Women and children first; it was an expectation placed on men but it has no basis under maritime law and it wasn't fully extended across all classes.
[–]Drezzzire 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Titanic has always been a horror movie for me
Everyone is worth saving unless you’re a man
You deserve to die a gruesome death and if you try to live and get on a boat meant for the privileged women then you’re a bad guy
Fucking true historical sexism
[–]TheDoctor88888888 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Well the logic was to save the most amount of life. The women they saved can have children, and the children that they saved can grow up and live longer than middle-aged men. Doesn’t make it any less f-ed up, but that was the idea.
[–]Drezzzire 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That’s idiotic logic
It’s not like they were the last humans on earth
Preservation of the species was not at stake
It was a bunch of fuckers on a big ass boat
Making children the #1 priority absolutely makes sense
Making women a bigger priority than men is the epitome of sexism
We are not disposable
That is unacceptable

Yes
[–]clonecharle1 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
That was a long time ago.
I highly doubt that they would force you out of a lifeboat just to save women first now. They might do it for a child though.
[–]Sawses 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
That seems a general rule for adults as a whole, though I do admit men would be expected to do it first.
[–]clonecharle1 -2 points-1 points0 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
My guess is that men would be expected to do it first but women would volunteer first.
[–]Sawses 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm not really sure about that; then again, I was raised in the South, and we're very much taught to do things for women and children. I bet it varies a ton by culture, though, so my guess might not be representative.
Plus I'm going into education, so...haha, another bias there.
[–]clonecharle1 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah. I'm Canadian and I was taught to just be kind with everyone equally. However, I agree that women and childrens don't have the same physiology than men and, usually, aren't as strong. For this reason I try to do the work that requires more strength.
I guess that education also has a large role in how everyone acts towards different genders. So, if you're going to work in education, do your best! You'll be shaping the future.
[–]Saishi-Ningen 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
"Women and children first" was so that men would cooperate and wouldn't fight each other, trying to get their families in the nearest lifeboat.
[–]Splinterscope -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No, it was so the men could concentrate and think of a solution. Lol

Well almost every employee in the bows of the ship was a man. I would guess that most of the people who lived were wealthy, and of them, maybe a slightly higher percentage of women because of “chivalry”.
These numbers don’t tell the story.
[–]w1g2 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Only 32% of male first class passengers survived which is still significantly lower than the 49% of 3rd class female passengers who survived (not to mention the 97% rate for first class females). That is the lowest surviving percentage for females and it is 2nd class passengers for the lowest male percentage which is 8%. In 2 out of the 3 classes more women survived than children. http://www.icyousee.org/titanic.html

Men who could vote prior to the 19th amendment: 100% of the white ones
Women who could vote prior to the 19th amendment: 0%
I figure if we are going back in time we should include this as well... downvote me all you want.

Can I downvote you for being wrong?
I'll skip the semantic argument about potential disenfranchisement of felons, etc. I'll also assume you mean in the USA because the 19th amendment doesn't apply elsewhere.
So.... women could and did vote. Before amendments started messing with things (and no amendment made voting more restricted, so nobody lost the right to vote over time) voting allowance was a states' rights issue. Most states tied the right to vote to property ownership.
Some women owned land. Those women could vote. Some men didn't own land. Those men couldn't. For a specific example, the state of New Jersey explicitly allowed women to vote in its initial set of laws.
