L.A. Times piece about the new law, for those who are out of the loop.

Sounds like the rationale was that the old law was creating a disincentive for people to get tested, because if they didn’t, they could deny awareness of the virus to avoid a felony charge for having sex with someone else, because they didn’t “know” they had it. Also, it sounds like it was being used to put people who were medicated to the point of being non-infectious in prison.

I suspect this is really about the fact that HIV meds are so good these days that even HIV-positive people can have unprotected sex with others, and provided their viral load is non-detectable, the risk of infection is extremely low. These folks don’t want to have to deal with the stigma of telling people they’re HIV-positive anymore, because it’s pragmatically an end to your sex life with anyone who isn’t already positive themselves.

Honestly, I don’t know how I feel about it, but I’m leaning towards disagreement. It’s not that I don’t have sympathy for HIV-positive people. It sucks to have your dating/sex pool limited to only other HIV-positive folks. But...at the end of the day, we still don’t have a cure for HIV, meaning if you get it, you have to take meds for the rest of your life, because if you don’t, the disease will kill you. That’s a pretty big deal to most people. Even if we have meds that work incredibly well now, it’s still a major lifestyle change, and the psychological impact is much greater than any other STD. You’re still making another person reliant on medication for fear of death.

So, no, at the end of the day, I disapprove of the new law.

But honestly—what does this really have to do with men’s rights?

Sooooo.... are we to infer from this oh-so-fine-and-upstanding candidate for elected office that a gay person is entitled to knowingly pass his HIV virus to another unsuspecting partner?

Frankly with his one statement he should be disqualified from attaining any position that empowers him to make decisions that affect the population.

And yes... how exactly does this dovetail into the issue of men's rights?

Every time I see shit like this, I worry about how much it will damage the perception of the gays.

This is especially fucked up since gays fought so hard to disassociate HIV with being gay, but here we are, doing the opposite now.

As a pansexual person, let me state, "HIV status and openness thereof between intimate partners is paramount regardless of sexual identity or the sexes of the parties involved". There are so many options for partners of HIV-positive individuals. There are a plethora of medications and contraceptive options, all of which would protect a person's sexual partner more than your silence.
