Age of consent in the UK is 16. No problem here.

[–]JohnKimble111 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

It's illegal for teachers to have sex with 16 or 17 year old pupils they teach, not that it's at all relevant here, but there are a very small number of people of those ages whom he can't date.

[–]boringcarpets 38 points39 points40 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

There is so much irrelevance in that article e.g. how much tuition is. A man had sex with a girl, that's literally it. sure he was married, but it was consensual, the girl was over the age of consent and not a student of his, this isn't even a "loophole", he just shagged a teenager/she shagged an older man which they're both legally free to do. Not sure why he's being paraded in the media other than to shame him

[–]desderon 16 points17 points18 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

other than to shame him

[–]Jamoz330 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I have a reasonably close connection to this school, the press looooooooooove to drop in tuition fees to just rile up anyone who had an issue with private schools. It’s pretty standard practice, shitty but standard.

[–]boringcarpets 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Pretty much continuing this class war bullshit. It's current year and people still can't accept that you can work to improve your life and provide opportunities for your family that you may never have had. As if social mobility is impossible and doesn't happen, and that spending money on things like education is a bad thing. This fucking country

[–]Consilio_et_Animis 27 points28 points29 points 8 years ago (42 children) | Copy Link

See how he is labelled “shabby and immoral” by the judge — yet the female gets a pussy pass, even though she knew she was having sex with a married man.

[–]mikesteane 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The judge has no business making such comments. The man has not committed an offence and it is completely inappropriate for a judicial official to use his position to make moral judgments on him.

[–]electricalnoise 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah well you go tell a judge that next time they start pontificating from the bench.

You're definitely not wrong, but good luck.

[–]mikesteane 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You can't do it in court, but you most certainly can do it elsewhere, which will actually put the judge at a disadvantage.

[–]PIG_CUNT 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Great point

[–]desderon -4 points-3 points-2 points 8 years ago (34 children) | Copy Link

His marriage is not her responsibility.

He was being irresponsible to his wife. She wasn't. Fail to see your point.

[–]raven982 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

If I sleep with a married women I know I’m doing wrong. Trying to rationalize it as her responsibility doesn’t change that. Now I’ll readily admit the person who is actually married is way more culpable.

[–]ThatNinaGAL 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If you're 17 when you do it, I am going to place most of the blame on the married adult.

[–]revengeofthedirty47 -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why? Because of some ill perceived notion that the adult should know better?

How about they're both to blame. She shagged an older married man at 17. 17! She's equally as culpable.

[–]TheNextMilo 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

He is addresssing immorality on both sides.

[–]Vanriel 16 points17 points18 points 8 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

Point was, they both knew that he was married. Yes he is at fault for cheating on his wife, but she agreed to sleep with a married man, which makes her equally guilty of being "shabby and immoral".

Not exactly rocket science to understand this.

[–]Wylanderuk 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not equally unless she was the pursuer with the intention of breaking them up and frankly even then the married person holds more of the blame (I would say maybe 40%), if the other party does not know the other person is married then they would have no blame.

So yes I agree they both share the blame but the majority of it is down to actual married person as they are the one that has responsibility to their wife/husband.

[–]desderon 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

And still she has no responsibility in that marriage, so no, she is not equally responsible.

I understand people want to spread the fault of cheating and find ways to hate the person that participated in the sex, the one that "stole" the partner, but that is not how it works.

The world owns you no fidelity. Your partner does, that's it. Try to spread responsibility in your head all you want, but it won't do a thing. Only your partner is responsible. Hate the other person all you want, its natural, but that person is still not responsible.

[–]Vanriel 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

Legally, she may not be responsible, no. But morally? Yes she is.

Lets break this down.

  1. He knew he was married. (kinda obvious but still)

  2. She knew he was married.

  3. They both consented to have sex despite knowing this.

  4. Since both of them had prior knowledge of the circumstances, and both agreed to and participated in the act, both are as the judge said "shabby and immoral"

You say the world owes you no fidelity. This is true, it does not. But the same time, there is such a thing as Personal Responsibility. You made a choice, you deal with the consequences.

That woman made a choice to sleep with a married man. She WILLINGLY made a choice that led to sexual intercourse with a partner who was already married. She knew that in advance. Therefore she is equally responsible for those actions.

[–]mwobuddy 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

yes, you are morally responsible for participating with immoral acts with others.

And if cheating on a spouse is an immoral act, then she helped them.

Its like driving the getaway car for a person committing a robbery, knowing that's what they're doing, and then claiming innocence.

Accessory to immoral act.

I think maybe people are having a subconscious reaction to the possible implication that the male is 'less responsible'. Like when a woman cheats on a guy and the guy goes to beat the fuck out of the other guy. Not at all. The guy still bears full moral blame, such as it is, but a person who participates in an immoral act also has some blame. Maybe not nearly as much as the primary individual, but they're still enabling immoral acts.

[–]ahhwell 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

All of this is about morality. Cheating may be scummy, but it's not illegal.

As for who's more "morally responsible": only one of them had made a vow, and only one of them broke it. The other person may have helped, but let's not pretend this is equally on both people.

[–]Vanriel 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Perhaps only one of the two made a vow, but I find it hard to understand why someone would, after finding out the other person was married, sleep with them. It makes both of them equally responsible in my eyes.

[–]ahhwell 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Two things can both be bad without them being equally bad. Punching someone in the face is bad, shooting someone in the face is more bad.

With cheating, both parties are engaged in behavior that is likely to destroy a relationship. That is bad. One party is also betraying the trust of someone they supposedly care about, and breaking their vows to each other. That makes it more bad.

[–]Vanriel 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I can see where you are coming from, and it is a well reasoned point. However I don't think i am going to budge on my opinion.

[–]ahhwell 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's fine, we don't have to agree on everything. As long as we agree that cheating is kinda sucky.

[–]desderon 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

I have been arguing morally all the time.

And no matter how much you repeat it, does not make it true. She knew he was married and still owed his wife nothing. You want to think it does because it makes you feel more protected, but what makes you feel good in your head does not change how the world is. Only your partner has a responsibility with you.

[–]Vanriel 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

So if you slept with a married individual, would that mean you were blameless in that situation?

[–]baconit4eva -5 points-4 points-3 points 8 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

Yes.

Look at it this way. If you were a bartender and knew a customer was an alcoholic and serve alcohol to that customer, are you responsible?

[–]rocelot7 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yes.

There's laws about this. I've never seen them enforced, but yeah there responsible.

[–]baconit4eva 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There are laws for serving intoxicated people, not alcoholics.

[–]Vanriel 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So you would feel no shame or guilt for taking part in the act that would cause so much pain and upset, the possible breaking of a family and putting possible children through the torturous process of having to watch their parents fight and scream at each?

Well, that makes you a terrible person in my opinion.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

the bartender is responsible to an extent. There are actual laws concerning this and if the patron gets a DUI or gets in a car crash the bartender could be in trouble if he gave too many drinks to someone. Though it's hard to prove.

Enabling someone's bad or immoral behavior is bad and immoral in and of itself. And it's also bad for society. If you're a farmer and sell fertilizer to someone and you know it will be used to make a bomb for terrorism but you don't tell anyone are you a moral person? Of course not. You're a terrible person because you're an enabler (even though you're not directly responsible for anything.)

[–]desderon -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Unless the partner has some sort of relationship with you, yes.

[–]Vanriel 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

So what if the individual you slept with had children? And what if because You slept with this individual they went through a divorce, which would cause those children upset and pain, watching as their parents fought each other for custody and being caught in the middle?

Would you still hold yourself blameless in this situation?

[–]desderon 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Whataboutthechildren-ism? Really?

If the family breaks and the children suffer is because the person with a family cheated, not otherwise.

[–]Urishima 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Same thing Colttaine said after people got on his case for sleeping with a cheating whore of a wife. And I completely agree.

[–]Consilio_et_Animis 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

His marriage is not her responsibility.

Really? You think it's not morally wrong to damage or break-up someones marriage on a whim? You don't think we have responsibilities to our fellow humans?

He was being irresponsible to his wife.

Really? What do you know about their relationship? Maybe they have an open marriage — not uncommon. Maybe she's shagging the Vicar.

Fail to see your point.

Try again. This time, orientate yourself first with your moral compass.

[–]mikesteane 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe bringing this man to court was the biggest threat to his marriage.

[–]electricalnoise 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You don't think the man could have prevented all of that by just -not- fucking her?

She didn't damage his marriage, he did. Even if she was chasing him with the intent of ending his marriage... All it would have taken is a little strength and personal responsibility.

He chose to make a vow, he chose to break it.

[–]KingRobotPrince -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The girl wasn't on trial so it would be fairly inappropriate/unnecessary for him to comment on her. He made the comments on the accused as he was saying he cannot be prosecuted simply for being shabby and immoral (which he definitely is). The girl was just a witness her behavior is not in question as it is not her trial.

[–]Consilio_et_Animis 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

The girl wasn't on trial so it would be fairly inappropriate/unnecessary for him to comment on her.

er... the man was no longer on trial when the judge made his comments — the judge had already dismissed the jury. And in any event, judges and juries are here to judge if someone broke the law or not, not their "moral" behaviour. When someone's trial is dismissed, or they are found not-guilty, the judges has no right to still "sit in judgement" of someone's moral behaviour.

for being shabby and immoral (which he definitely is)

Really? Who are you to pass judgement? Why should he not have sex with a 17 year old girl? What's wrong with that?

The girl was just a witness her behavior is not in question as it is not her trial.

Well, you seem happy to pass judgement on the man's "behaviour", even though he is not on trial! And just because someone is not "on trial" does not mean one cannot pass moral judgement on them — as you have so clearly illustrated. And she wasn't a "witness" — she had accused him of a very serious offence.

[–]mikesteane 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There is a difference between passing judgment as a citizen and passing judgment from the office of QC/

[–]Neko404 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

i’ll agree what he did was sleezy but cheating on your wife is not illegal.

[–]presidentdoggo 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't see anything wrong with this legally wise. However morally it's fucked up

[–]mrwhibbley 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

He is still a piece of shit for cheating on his wife. Legal or not it's creepy as fuck.

[–]mwobuddy 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

downvote because you added the second sentence. I would've upvoted the first.

[–]derpylord143 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I kinda agree with mrwhibbley, though thats because I think massive age gaps between partners is creepy in general (disregarding all other circumstances). That said, its solely my personal views on the subject, which shouldn't govern law or others views... <-- that is said so as to say I dont think others have to share my view, not to try and strawman or anything of that nature, its merely for clarification of my own position (I have caused issues before when I make points like this, hence the disclaimer).

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points-3 points 8 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

If the genders were reversed, none of you hypocrites would be defending him

[–]ifihadasister 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Why would anyone need to defend a 17 year old boy who had sex with a 39 year old woman.

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points-3 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

You know what I meant. Nobody here would be defending the 39 year old woman

[–]raven982 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I have zero issues with a single 39 year old woman fucking someone the legal age of consent. If she were married I’d have issues with it.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]raven982 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not breaking the law in the interest of self preservation is not the same as relying on it for moral judgments.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So you are cucked to man made laws? Can’t make moral decisions for yourself so you het big brother to do it for you?

[–]derpylord143 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We would... unless and I say this as it is important, the age of consent was higher (as someone aged 17 in some states of the US cannot consent legally for instance). You see we are judging this based on the principle that there was nothing legally wrong (even if there was fault morally, which many of our above members have noted). A situation that frankly, we would more than likely accept or at the bare minimum acknowledge as applying equally to both sides... As such your assertion we are hypocrites is unfounded.

[–]Lumberingfeather 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If the genders were reversed there would have been no court case.

[–]PIG_CUNT 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In your pathological need to bash contributors here, you miss the point:

If the genders were reversed we would STILL say the 17 year old was just as culpable and we’d STILL say the 39 year old was just as legally entitled to have sex with the 17 year old. ZERO hypocrisy.

Boy are you biased! It blinds you.
