I don't think the feminists will take over the group, rather they will do what they always do: go all out to prevent it being started in the first place.

Brace yourself for the attacks which are coming: feminists will brand you a misogynist, rape apologist, etc etc. Your proposed group will "make them feel unsafe" if not actually "make the school unsafe for women", etc.

You could write the rules in such a way as to make it difficult for feminists to re-purpose the group.

And of course, there should be an organising group that's dedicated to setting up men's groups in universities, so we don't have to go re-inventing the wheel each time.

That's why I suggest that you join MHRAconnect and start a project there. It's very small right now, but active members will build it up.

When you sign up, please try to assist with two other projects to help get the ball rolling. Pass this message to any men's rights activists you know.

You literally can not have feminist in a group about men and boys. They don't give a fuck about them. Now, that is people that identify as feminist, but are not actually feminists (think Christina Hoff Summers types).

Actual feminists will not let anything that doesn't portray men as evil rapists out to put women back in the kitchen exist. Men can't have issues, because of patriarchy, or privilege, or some other boogey man...

They have taken over literally every aspect of every University in the western world. If you let them, they will take over your club in the first meeting. Even before the first meeting.

They have already taken over part of your mind.

You should get in touch with Justin Trottier of the Canadian Association for Equality. It's a tax-exempt charity that has to be ideologically neutral, and it works with feminist groups and with anti-feminists. They're not a "men's rights group", but rather an equality group with a particular focus on men's issues because those issues are currently underserved.

I bet he or one of his colleagues would be able to give you some advice on how to walk the razor's edge of being open to feminists while not being taken over by them.

If there are feminists there that hate MRAs the first things they will do is either immediately try to get you shut down when they hear about it or alternatively they will constantly try to block anything to try to do or make demands of what you are allowed to say and so on in public.

Worse, depending on how aggressive and violent they are, they may try to start a smear campaign against you and get you kicked off campus somehow, but that's a worse case scenario.

It all depends entirely on the amount of feminists that are there and what type they are.

It all depends on who shows up. If feminists tell their friends to come and cause trouble, they could easily be the majority.

I suggest you have some sort of structure to the discussion. Don't just leave it as a free-for-all. This might help prevent the group from getting hijacked, especially in the beginning.

I wouldn't be as fatalistic as some others here but do be careful. In all honestly getting some well meaning feminists on your side could be good for the groups future. Just stick to your guns, know definitively what you want this group to be about, be polite, kind and cordial especially when you're opponents are not, and never at any stage take no for an answer.

Hey! I just wanted to say I think this is a great idea. While my University didn't have a group like this, they did host a few talks throughout the year about such topics. I attended one (I should mention here that I'm a woman, and a feminist) and it was made clear in the beginning that this was a space to talk about mens' issues. The speaker led a few exercises thay only male identifying people were allowed to respond to, and everyone else was asked to just listen. At the end there was small group discussions where everyone could talk about what had happened. It was really eye opening for me to be there and I'm glad it was a space where men felt comfortable and free to talk about their experiences.

If you'd like I can try to get more info on that. I know starting a club is daunting, much less a club where you'll have to do research and provide discussion content. If you can get speakers to come for workshops around any specific topic (the one I went to was on masculinity vs. toxic masculinity) that might also help with guiding discussion.

It won't be taken over unless you're spineless, in which case you're the wrong person to start the group. Stop worrying about name calling and bullshit smears. Run the group and keep it on track or don't bother.

I'm interested to see how this plays out. I agree that the general trend would be for them to try to shut the group down by making wild accusations and pushing a threat narrative. If the group organizers are diligent, it should be hard for them to take over--because our ideas are right and theirs are wrong.

Include in your constitution or charter or mission statement an explicit rejection of misandry and an affirmation that men's rights are human rights. Our society harms men in various ways and we have a moral obligation to help reduce their suffering; hateful blaming of men for their own problems can be no part of the solution.
