The Doctor is more than simply a worldly character that is above matters of sexuality. He never once attached his ego to his gender. And now that the Doctor is a lady, I will hope that philosophy continues.

As for this being a "feminist pandering political move", I don't see that. There has been interest for a long while to see an actress take on the role of The Doctor, but showrunner Steven Moffatt has blocked that from being a reality at every turn.

Now, I skipped the majority of the Capaldi era (the beginning of series 8 failed to capture my interest), but the view of the writing is mixed; some love it, some hate it. The prevailing wisdom is that more feminist-friendly storylines were brought into series 10, which BBC pressured Moffatt into greenlighting.

Now, with the new showrunner casting a woman in the role, the BBC might - and I stress might back off on casting influence over the writing now that there's this giant in-your-face change. I'm hopeful enough to give series 11 a try. Plus, Whittaker was a great presence on Broadchurch.

[–]KDulius 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Both Whittaker and the produces have said that it's a move done because "yay feminism" already

[–]blueyb 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Can we please not. Seriously, can we please not rise to the bait, here? Can we not fly off the handle just because the new Doctor is a woman?

This is not a men's rights issue. Let Roosh at his Return of Kings call for the same boycott he calls for every time. Let the media reporting "MRAs call for boycotts" be as false as they were for Mad Max and Star Wars.

[–]Mr_MRAnarchist 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree... but when the show finally dies, not because the new doctor is a woman, but because the writing/ story is terrible and they are alienating their fan base with all the men are evil / feminist crap, it will be seen as "woman hating"... the same way the new Ghostbusters movie was talked about... nothing about it being terrible.. it failed because men hate women.

[–]bufedad 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not boycotting it, I'm just not interested in watching it.

Doctor who has been all about the women on the show since the introduction of Amy Pond. I finally got fed up with it during the Clara Oswald run.

I don't see this suddenly getting better.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You know, even Roosh can be right. Keep in mind that both Ghandi and Hitler thought puppies were cute.

[–]blueyb 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Sure. But he wasn't right about Star Wars or Mad Max, and us having an uproar over Dr. Who plays PERFECTLY into our critics hands. It's hard enough getting people to respect MR as a legitimate cause without gift-wrapping CNN headlines like "Mens Rights Advocates call for Boycott of Dr. Who after female lead named". It allows the feminists to further to narrative that MRAs are spoiled man-children with only petty issues and loss of "privileged status" to complain about.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

LOL! We could be absolute saints and we still wouldn't get respect. And there's no need for an uproar, only a quiet boycott.

[–]blueyb 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

but....why?

Are you really that upset about the new Dr. Who being female?

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Upset" is an emotional term. I am not "upset" about it, i just don't think it should be encouraged.

[–]goodfoobar 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

The following line is the most concerning.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/doctor-jodie-whittaker-replace-peter-152819072.html

She said fans must not be "fearful", added that she is a feminist who does not want to be “boxed in by what you’re told you can and can’t be”.

The last season was full of you-go-girl and boys-suck undertones and that statement makes it look like it will continue.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Notice the implication that those who complain are just "scared of girls."

[–]bufedad 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's had women lead characters since the introduction of Amelia Pond. She was the main character for her time on the show, and then Clara Oswald was the main character for her time on the show.

I'm not excited for this. I actually stopped watching during the Amelia Pond show for awhile, because it was just that, the "Amelia Pond Show", instead of "Doctor Who". Got back into it, and caught back up... then they did the same thing with Clara, and I just haven't been back into it again.

[–]mikesteane 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wonder if she's going to be a like a real female doctor; putting in less hours, leaving to have a baby, retiring earlier and not seeing as many patients. Will the programmes now be 30% shorter?

[–]RapeMatters 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Well, he can regenerate into different people. Just because he's never regenerated as a woman before doesn't mean he can't.

I'm pretty ambivalent at this time. We'll see how she handles the role.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

LOL! You actually need to wait to know this is going to be full-on SJW bullshit? Twenty years ago it would have been just a gimmick, nowadays it's a political move.

[–]HiredMind 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Last season was lame. It seemed to have lost something in the storytelling.

Now I'll be considered sexist if I don't express my undying love of the show? Fuck that - I'm not watching any more. I'd be fine with a spin-off with a female time lord, but you're right, this is just feminist BS.

[–]victortherobot 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Just because he's never regenerated as a woman before doesn't mean he can't.

This already happened to two other Doctors, just not the protagonist.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Only the Doctor is the Doctor, the others are Time Lords.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The Master went from male to female. Why can't The Doctor?

[–]KDulius 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You do realise that was in contravention to established law from classic who right?

What am i saying; of course you don't

[–]HiredMind 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The fastest way to change the culture is not to create new cultural icons. You have to corrupt and/or destroy the old ones first.

[–]OnTheSlope 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Who cares? Why can't the doctor be a dame?

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Why can't Shaft be white? Because it sends the message that nothing belongs to blacks, that's why. Same with Dr Who and men. And that's not even taking into account how SJW the Beeb has become. This will almost certainly be a load of feminist swill.

[–]OnTheSlope 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I never thought of the Doctor as an archetypically masculine character in that way.

Edit: maybe he is a strong representation of mechanistic thinking like many SciFi heroes, but I don't think masculinity or mechanistic thought patterns are relegated solely to men. I think a woman could play the Doctor very well.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I think you need to look up words before you use them.

[–]OnTheSlope 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You don't think Shaft is an archetype? Or you don't think women can be masculine? Or you don't think mechanistic thought is predominantly masculine?

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Don't waste my time, moron.

[–]OnTheSlope -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Congratulations, you've won the argument!

Tom Baker.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Tom Baker wasn't a woman.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We'll see where this goes. I like the idea. I think it gives the writers some interesting new options.

Now, if they use this as a platform to do little more than talk down at the vast majority of their fans (see also: ghost busters 2016) then thats a problem and they'll likely pay for it in viewership (see also: ghost busters 2016)

[–]Elfere 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Just to be clear... We here at mensrights are happy with equality of a Phoenix like character right?

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Speaking of Phoenix, let's get Marvel to re-do the whole Dark Phoenix saga -- but this time with Scott Summers as Phoenix.

[–]Elfere 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I honestly don't watch the show. Is there any reason the dr hasn't come back as a non-human before?

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

OMG! You referred to women as non-human! Misogyny alert! Misogyny alert!

[–]Elfere 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh, no, I'm done talking about women and men reincarnation of time lords.

I wanna know if time lords can come back as non humans.

http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/avengersvsxmen/images/2/2f/Cyclops_Dark_Phoenix.png/revision/latest?cb=20120912204124

did you not know about this, or were you trying to be clever?

[–]bufedad 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That is Cyclops as the Dark Phoenix, which is completely separate from the Dark Phoenix Saga (a specific story line).

[–]iamcrazyjoe -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

i know, just like this is a female Doctor Who, they aren't remaking old Doctor Who with a female recast.

[–]bufedad 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, they aren't going full Ghostbusters remake on it.

But this hasn't been the same doctor who is several years. This is just a sign that they intend for that to get worse.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't recall the Dark Phoenix saga being redone with Summers. Did you not know that, or were you trying to be clever?

[–]iamcrazyjoe -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I dont recall Doctor Who being redone either, so your point doesnt really make sense does it?

[–]Folamh3 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Complaining about this stuff makes the entire movement look bad. It's a TV show. Stop getting upset over nothing.

It was first stated in The Deadly Assassin that a Time Lord can regenerate twelve times (thirteen incarnations in all). There were exceptions to this rule, however: when the Master reached the end of his regenerative cycle, he took possession of the body of another person to continue living

From Wikipedia. She is number 13. What gives?

[–]bufedad 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

She is number 14. The doctor once regenerated into the same form.

On Trenzalore the doctor was beset by basically ever opponent in the universe. He guarded the opening to the dimension where Gallifrey was shifted to. He guarded it for so long, it was his last regeneration, he guarded it for centuries until finally age had kept up with him.

The time lords from their dimension renewed his energy. He has more regenerations (this is when he regenerated into Capaldi from Smith). No one knows how many more regenerations he now has.

[–]Startthecar27 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Til. Ty

[–]bufedad 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Eh... no stress.

Even then, it was Clara who saved him. She spoke to the dimensional crack and asked the Time Lords to help him.

Clara was the hero of the show when she was on the show, just as Amy was the hero of the show when she was on the show.

It got so bad my wife mentioned it to me, and she just didn't want to watch anymore... That's what made me notice it.

[–]cymrich 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

he made a comment shortly after this happened that was something along the lines of "it's a whole new cycle" implying that he has 12 more regenerations.

[–]hottake_toothache 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I like the idea. It has the potential to be fresh and different for the show.

Too bad it's happening in the current media climate where it feels like artists have a gun to their head to push the feminist agenda. That somewhat sullies what is otherwise a good idea.
