I am not sure they are mischaracterizing it as money related. The stuff about the guy in the wheelchair and his stolen items simply provide details about the evolution of the relationship between the victim and his girlfriend (and her cohorts). The article does not suggest that these details mitigate the women's actions in any way. The article discusses the women taking the victim's money after he was dead, but does not suggest that was the reason for the abuse or that the money-related stuff mitigated the women's actions. If anything, including those details actually make the women look worse. Not only did they abuse and kill this guy - they also fleeced him.
