I like to think of myself as a rationalist (materialist in the historic/philosophic sense of the word) and have thought women should be allowed to be topless anywhere a man would be.

As I grow older I know that this will be abused. Women will want to be allowed to be topless while concurrently insisting that any perceived objectification is sexist.

Could we use this ruling to defend men who are routinely shamed, and even assaulted and battered, by topless women who use "male gaze" as an excuse for their actions?

Here's a problem that was brought to my attention a while ago: by what logic can you legalize topless women as an equality issue without also allowing the same for teenage girls? You can't. And there are not a lot of people that think it is at all OK for adults to freely ogle topless teenagers. Female breasts are either a special case of sexual flesh, or they aren't.

Breasts are nurturing for babies and villification of breasts is villification of motherhood.

Whatever you are, be proud of it. Got a dick and balls? Be proud of your God (or "random dice") given role in this world. Have a pair of ovaries? Wear them proudly and be the best damn woman you can be and don't let anyone make you feel ashamed for the biology you were given.

Also, 99% of men who want women to "cover up" are just grand standing for their girlfriend/wife. Honestly, who hasn't been in a relationship and had your SO go, "She looks so trashy." and you saw this gorgeous chick but said, "Yeah, she's totally a slut."

It's just so much easier to just say that than deal with most women's insecurity--because she's asking you, "Would you leave me and bang her instead?" and the answer is clearly, "No." But women don't communicate with straight language. (Which is news to nobody married, but completely foreign to many of the younger audience on Reddit.)

And as for the OP thinking it will be abused. Abused how? Be specific. Because anywhere a man can be topless (the park, the beach) seems pretty fair. And anywhere a man shouldn't be topless (a business meeting), seems equally fair.

I'm not pro-mens rights just so I can take some away from women. Everyone needs to get the damn laws off of other people's bodies. Regardless of gender. If you want to whistle, you whistle. It doesn't matter if other people don't like whistling. You want to whip out a titty and feed your baby? It doesn't matter if other people don't like titties.

I'm on their side here, but their argument is ridiculous. Sorry, breasts are sex objects. I will continue to objectify them as such unapologetically.

If breasts are not seen as sexual parts of the body then they can be shown in public like any other non-sexual body part. But this would also mean it is not sexual assault to touch them, just like a man cannot claim sexual assault for a woman touching his chest.

Guys, I have to tell you, our chests are JUST as attractive as female boobies. (More, if you ask me...) And our nipples are just as sexual as female nipples.

Once more women USE their freedom, it will become a lot less novel or distracting.

Ha ha! These feminists don't seem to realise that most women's power derives from covering themselves up and restricting their sexuality. Making a show of themselves is not empowering, it is giving away power that, once upon a time they were able to wield very effectively.

While I have absolutely no issue with women being topless if they choose to be. I generally am very friendly to the notion of people being nude and think that society at large has a very prude and puritan stance on such issues.

I think that comparing female breasts to male breasts is a false equivalence. Female breasts are actively involved in reproduction. Male breasts aren't (beyond of course using chest muscles for motion but women also do this).

I think a better comparison would be testicles (not that there seems to be a good analogue for a comparison). They are also involved in reproduction but usually aren't the primary sex organ people focus on but nonetheless make regularly contact with and play with.

I do understand that from the biological standpoint this isn't the case and the testes do actually have a direct female analogue in the ovaries but this seems to be about the visual as opposed to the reproductive function.

I think we need to put people under brain-imaging scans and see how gay men react to a shirtless guy vs how straight men react to a shirtless girl. As a gay man I find a shirtless guy to be quite an attractive sight, but I don't know how it compares to straight men seeing shirtless women.

Who cares if heads explode? Everything that offers anyone any freedom will be abused by someone. That's just kind of a law of nature. When you leave out a tray of free cookies (unsupervised) and put up a sign that says "Please Share, Take One", there will always be at least one person that doesn't honour that.

This is about giving the freedom to everyone and being vigilant about those who don't respect it.
