Is it just me, or is the idea of black boys being mutilated with (presumably) European tourists watching for entertainment value EXACTLY the sort of colonial exploitation that we thought had been consigned to history?

As usual the article makes all that's possible to remain neutral on the subject, but if it was anything done to a girl, even the slightest sting with a needle on the clitoris, that would be mass uproar. (and rightfully so)

It hurts my soul that things like this exist and nobody even questions it. Although I am against routine infant circumcision in the US, this is a whole different beast. These are young boys being forced (sometimes even hunted down) to have their dicks skinned without anesthetic with an old dirty ceremonial knife.

This is 100% comparable to FGM, yet hardly anyone knows this is going on and hardly anyone cares to speak up or do anything about it. We have organizations (rightfully) fighting to end FGM but totally ignore stuff like this.

It is 2017, we have put humans on the fucking moon for god's sake. Why are we still cutting up people's genitals for stupid fucking reasons?

These are passage rituals, so to call these people "boys" is a bit disingenuous. They are doing this to "become men" after all. So it's a consenting decision, at least in 'their' society.

While I find the whole act of circumcision being performed on men via cultural pressures immoral in and of itself, this is a tradition dating back centuries. It's easy to be disgusted by this when viewing it from across the ocean standing from a modern western civilisation view point.

Still, I find the whole situation nightmarish, and feel fortunate that I was not born in such a culture.

I'm certain that a culture that possesses this aspect, has a lot of other things that many of us in the West would find horrid, and I'm even more certain that would include certain cultural practices that their women must endure.
