From one of the comments:

In the petition to stop the screening people, correctly so, pointed out that men's rights groups had funded part of the movie.

Incorrectly so. The movie was not funded by money from men's rights groups. The movie was funded by a KickStarter drive.

Yes it is true that a large amount of the KickStarter donations came from men associated with the MRM, but the important distinction was that the donors lost the ability to withdraw funding once the drive was completed. There was no way for the MRM to say "make this nice or we pull funding". There was no way to influence creative control over the move.

[–]atheist4thecause[S] 23 points24 points25 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And in fact, a lot of the funding was not MRM-related. The Kickstarter only succeeded after being picked up by Milo on Twitter, who is not an MRA, and most of his followers are not MRA's, although some are.

[–]Racoon8 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

IIRC the Kickstarter was for the editing, ie the movie was already in the can by the time Cassie asked for money from the public. She made it very clear from the very beginning Kickstarter donors will have no editorial influence on the movie, in fact Kickstarter's rules explicitly forbid that afaik. Yet that's what those feminists claimed in their petition, therefore the 'propaganda' accusation.

[–]AloysiusC 20 points21 points22 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Currently the original petition has almost 2k signatures. We're only at 254 (just started). Let's get it moving.

Calling Milo!

[–]splodgenessabounds 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This petition at 1210 as I type - keep at it people!

[–]SilverHoard 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

6,265 now. Going strong! Only need 1,235 more.

Be sure to sign both of them though. Too bad there are two identical ones with different signatures. Dividing the total number.

Too late, the cinema pulled the showing.

[–]ThePigmanAgain 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My manager signed it.

It might be good to voice your disappointment with Palace Cinemas

[–]splodgenessabounds 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Excellent idea. Please, no offensive language or shit-flinging - just pose questions and insist they respond properly (no pre-formatted bollocks). You might also suggest that you and your friends (and their friends [and their friends' friends]) will think twice before going to any of their future screenings.

Here's a copy of the email that I sent to them...

Dear Sir/Madam

I'm writing this email as I've recently been made aware that you have bowed to feminist pressure and cancelled your screening of Cassie Jaye's 'The Red Pill' documentary. I am deeply disappointed in your organisation. I have looked at the Change.org petition which, as I understand, was the impetus for the cancellation, and have seen that the vast majority of commenter seem all to happy to be spreading misconceptions and untruths about the documentary.

Many comments made reference to the quality of the documentary, calling it "rubbish" and "appauling garbage", another insisting that the film is "not debate but propaganda", and my personal favourite "bullshit". One is forced to wonders how these people are in a position to comment on the quality of the documentary given that it hasn't even been shown in Australia yet? It seems like an entirely unfounded assertion.

The vast majority of these comments make a link between this documentary and hate speech; "vile misogynist hate speech", "this film promotes violence against women". Again, given that the chances of these people having seen the film is very slim (it has only been screened in New York and Los Angeles) we're forced to question how they know this? Having seen the extended trailor, and having read several reviews by publications such as The Telegraph and The Guardian, I have seen no evidence of any such "hate speech", and certainly no incitement of violence towards anyone.

Whilst the definition of "hate speech" is somewhat open to interpretation, the state of Victoria has the Race and Religious Tolerance Act 2001 which provides concession if the conduct is engaged "reasonably and in good faith...

(a) in the performance, exhibition or distribution of an artistic work; or (b) in the course of any statement, publication, discussion or debate made or held, or any other conduct engaged in, for— (i) any genuine academic, artistic, religious or scientific purpose; or (ii) any purpose that is in the public interest; or (c) in making or publishing a fair and accurate report of any event or matter of public interest.

I think you'll agree that all of the above concessions apply in this instance. As such, I find it lamentable that you have so easily bowed to the pressure of a petition signed by 1,330 people (or roughly 0.023% of the population of Victoria).

Furthermore, if you look at these comments;

"Fuck misogynistic pro rape racist assholes and their stupid superiority complexes"

"don't let these pathetic excuses for human beings regress us into the dark ages"

"to air this propaganda....lines the pockets of these bigots"

It seems that the only people here being hateful are the commenters who supported the petition which you, Palace Cinemas, have bowed to. Not only are your actions cowardly and run against the spirit of free speech and freedom of expression which we as a society value very highly, but you also give creedence to the hateful comments and intentions behind the petition by caving to their demands.

Palace Cinemas as an organisation have shown themselves to be spineless, unprofessional and unprincipled. Please consider this a formal complaint against your organisation.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards Muh name

There's a live chat feature on their website, so let them know your views instantly if you like: https://www.palacecinemas.com.au/

[–]Racoon8 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Please read the statement the cinema sent to Men's Rights Melbourne here: https://www.change.org/p/stop-extremists-censoring-what-australians-are-allowed-to-see-save-the-red-pill-screening

They're talking about 'overwhelmingly negative reactions' and specifically referenced the feminist Change.org petition. Hopefully they can be swayed by more signatures than they were able to get.

[–]elonsbattery 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The top comment says the movie has been pulled from the cinema. Is this true?

[–]SirSkeptic 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, Kino have cancelled the screening.

Another venue is being sought. The screening will go ahead on the original date. It's just 'where' that's the issue.

[–]SirSkeptic 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

It looks like "Susan Smith" is a play on Mr Smith from the Matrix and that she might be an employee of Kino cinema itself.

This would make her part of the machine. :)

edit: if you have time go to https://www.facebook.com/Palacecinemas/reviews/ and read the backlash against the cancelling decision.

[–]cherrycheesecake 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Right now, they're being review-brigaded from both sides.

[–]SirSkeptic 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I know, it's the most action their site has ever seen.

[–]omegaphallic 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

LMFAO, its great because instead of avoiding contraversy by cancelling the show, they now finds themselves balls deep in it.

[–]AcidJiles 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

We should try and enlist twoxchromsomes in this. A major claim from feminists is that MRAs do not do enough activism. Where here is a film about that being censored from a feminist. If they truly want us be activist and have a discussion about the issues and believe in freedom of speech they need to stand up and get behind the showing of this.

[–]Niceto_Ocurra 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Are you tallikg about one of the subs that autoban anyone that has made a comment in this sub?

[–]AcidJiles 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not sure if they do, I have commented there recently and I am not banned. It would more be to expose the hypocrisy of their position. A feminist (well someone who was a feminist) is being silenced and there is silence from them.

[–]OPisAbundleOfTwigs 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Here is Cassie Jaye's interview with Dave Rubin.

[–]Evil_Majin_Buu 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I find it funny they would censor this doco but not stuff like 'no men beyond this point'' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2556936/ I watched it on netflix AUS couple of days ago, the premise is pretty much all men are not needed in the world anymore so they put them in camps to die off while women can give birth without sex and all new borns are females, so yeah lets censor this documentary lel

[–]tallwheel 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That actually sounds pretty interesting. Might have to give it a watch.

[–]xtremeradness 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I assume it's fiction, yes? Not like a "things to come" video?

I think this is a good point. We need to recognize that we have power, and while men may be victims to some extent, what is important is that we are not powerless to make changes.

[–]Xemnas81 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Too late, last petition to ban it was successful.

[–]atheist4thecause[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is still a separate petition that could potentially undo the damage, if that's true.

Please consider boycotting Palace.

[–]Dann01 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If it falls through with Palace, just book it at another theater. It has sold out, there is plenty of interest, i'm also on the waiting list. This film will be ground breaking

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Where can I watch this movie online? They can't censor the internet.

[–]Niceto_Ocurra 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

yet

[–]DrDarkMD 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

If the movie is about Mens Rights, why is called the Red Pill?

IMO the Red Pill is something entirely different than men just wanting rights and is in of itself 'toxic'.

[–]atheist4thecause[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The Red Pill refers to "truthing" people. It can be used separately from the group of Red Pillers. It's also a catchy title. Those are my guesses.

[–]DrDarkMD 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

True, but in the context of Men’s Rights it is very easily and mistakenly conflated with the Red Pill movement of chauvinistic men. I fail to see how the creator of this doc didn’t see this. Or perhaps they did and this is a way to get greater attention to the doc.

Personally when I saw the title I immediately assumed it was conflating the two ideas together. Though I looked further and realise that is not in fact the case, others (such as those signing this petition) probably didn’t.

[–]atheist4thecause[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You could always ask her on Twitter. @Cassie_Jaye It's possible she didn't even know there was a separate movement called the Red Pill Movement. After all, she went into this issue as a feminist and I believe learned about the term on her journey.

[–]Collective82 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a matrix reference that has been corrupted by pick up artists and their ilk.

[–]TomHicks -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Uhm. I think she oughta put it up on youtube. Censorship won't matter then. The film has already been funded well beyond what she asked for.

[–]atheist4thecause[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

What she asked for was to get the film created having already put in her funds as well as the funds of some of her family members. She has a right to try to earn that money back, and she has a right to even profit from the movie. The more profit the movie makes, the more people will be interested in making films discussing men's rights in the future. I'm all for her making her profit before putting "The Red Pill" on places like Youtube, where it will end up eventually anyways most likely. Timing is everything.

[–]TomHicks -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She can still profit off of youtube. Professional Youtubers are a thing.

The more profit the movie makes, The more people that see this, the more people will be interested in making films discussing men's rights in the future.

FTFY. They can't see it if it's restricted to certain cinemas and then blocked.

[–]atheist4thecause[S] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

You don't seem to understand how businesses and capitalism operates. If there is no money in men's rights then people will not make movies about men's rights.

EDIT: And btw, I said timing is everything. There's no reason that people can't wait until after "The Red Pill" is out of theaters.

EDIT2: Also, about professional Youtubers, you're being completely unrealistic. Professional Youtubers make their money by having a following, not a single movie. It's not close to the same model or anything. It doesn't offer close to the same credibility as a professional moviemaker.
