“I’m doing it to show the world my body isn’t theirs to force into a size or shape, to decide what happens to my ovaries, or how high my tits should rest. I’m doing it for my fucking self.”

why does her body autonomy require other people's participation?

[–]cranktheguy 26 points27 points28 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

How is she going to show the world if they can't look?

[–]Underwater_Karma 28 points29 points30 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

fuck if I know how these people think.

"I'm here to show you something...DON'T YOU FUCKING LOOK!"

[–]MRA-automatron-2kb 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

LOL - female logic is so funny.

[–]zombie2uRBX 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I feel like the idea isn't to show people, but rather allow it to be the norm which is totally acceptable. The issue is is that until you have hordes of women walking around topless or nude at beaches designed for that, it won't be the norm and people will look. Overall, this article is dumb.

[–]Underwater_Karma 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

being nude at nude beaches IS the norm.

She was self conscious about being nude because she hadn't done it before...and rejected ownership of that feeling and instead insisted she was the hottest thing at the nude beach and everybody couldn't stop staring.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Same attitude as the girls who walk around with shirts so low their nipples show..."Look at my books"/"My eyes are here"

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not only that, but you don't need to be nude for any of those things.

[–]Underwater_Karma 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

doesnt' sound like she was nude for very long. she got undressed, was overcome with self consciousness and feeling like everyone was looking at her (yeah...I'm sure SHE was the choice dish at the nude beach), and instead of realizing that's how everyone feels their first time at a nude beach, she decides to write an article. and make herself look like a narcissistic but hypocritical asshole.

[–]splodgenessabounds 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

why does her body autonomy require other people's participation?

Because how would the world know how autonomous she was if no-one saw her do autonomousy things?

I say: Picsorban.

She also got offended that men didn't buy her drinks.

[–]Hey_You_Asked 22 points23 points24 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

I speak as someone who has done the whole nude beach thing, and consider myself someone who prefers the nude beach experience.

She brings up several points, even though her writing is fully catered to the trashness that is Buzzfeed. I'll address them one by one.

1 - "he infers that it’s “clothing optional.” It feels weird and unfair that some people [the clothed frat boys] on this part of the beach are dressed."

She's right. It's uncomfortable as shit, and out of place for them to be there, especially if the beach is progressively more nude-friendly. They are there to ogle.

2 - "The guys smirking."

HA. Ok, so she probably has an aura of "I've never done this before" like many do. I've seen it before. She also probably whipped out that "Sex Object" book, which of course would not fail to make everyone lose their minds over how hilarious it is. Just go to the beach. You happen to be naked there, and it's freeing. Just enjoy it.

3 - "I head back to my chair and spend some time watching passersby."

She's literally ogling back. Of course there's a strange dynamic.

I was going into this to defend her, as this is a niche and generally weird thing as viewed by Americans, but honestly. She's out of place, and reinforcing her own experience by covering herself up, and MAKING IT WEIRD.

I shouldn't have typed this out. Fuck Buzzfeed hires morons, and allows morons to publish stuff. I hate this.

[–]Wisemanner 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

She's right. It's uncomfortable as shit, and out of place for them to be there, especially if the beach is progressively more nude-friendly. They are there to ogle.

I've been to nude beaches too. And let's get it out of our heads that only males don't play the game. Females do it too, often keeping on their bikini bottoms, or indeed their bikinis.

[–]Hey_You_Asked -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Keeping on bikini bottoms is a sort of standard even. They're still topless, and for the most part, nude.

[–]Wisemanner 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

and for the most part, nude.

No more nude that males wearing Speedos. Nude means nude, not everything except a bikini bottom.

And let's get it out of our heads that voyeurs are exclusively male. Women like to suggest they are, but they are not.

[+]Hey_You_Asked -13 points-12 points-11 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Oh, I don't think they are, don't worry. And also, speedos cover more than bikini bottoms, let's not kid ourselves.

[–]IllPanYourMeltIn 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In what way do they cover more? If anything they're more revealing; you can't see a vagina through a bikini bottom but you can sure as shit see dick through a speedo.

What is this?

[–]bufedad 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Amazing! This person knows what every woman on the planet thinks and how they behave, and so can conclusively prove that no woman has ever or would ever ogle a nude man!

Except, he's saying the exact opposite.

[–]locks_are_paranoid 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

"he infers that it’s “clothing optional.” It feels weird and unfair that some people [the clothed frat boys] on this part of the beach are dressed."

Clothing optional means that wearing clothes is just as much of an option as not wearing them.

[–]Hey_You_Asked 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Wrong interpretation. It's known as a nude beach. You can even extrapolate that it's more than known: it's established, since you can't just be nude on any beach.

However, you also can't say to people "you can't be clothed" for a multitude of reasons.

So no, it's not "just as much" of an option.

[–]Wisemanner 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

you also can't say to people "you can't be clothed" for a multitude of reasons

I was on a beach in The South of France a couple of weeks ago, where in the past there have been cases of people (usually women in bikini bottoms) not playing the game. Since my last visit, somebody had put up a large sign on a wall with pictures of swimming trunks, swimming shorts, bikini tops, and bikini bottoms, indicated as not acceptable. I did not see anyone this year who was not totally nude.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes you can, provided you enforce it consistently.

[–]splodgenessabounds 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Loryn explains why she’s subjecting herself to a nude beach experience and posting it on BuzzFeed: “I’m doing this nude beach trip to take back my body, which society long ago decided it owned. To take back what’s mine.”

The mystery deepens. Who took Loryn's body? Why did they take it? Where did they take it? Did it enjoy itself, and if so, with whom? Is this the obverse of an "out of body experience"?

Enquiring minds need to know...

[–]yoshi_win 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The Patriarchs put her body on this nude beach and frat boys violated it using the Male Gaze, because of Rape Culture. Luckily her soul merged with it and covered the naughty bits before it could be fully Objectified.

[–]splodgenessabounds 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The Patriarchs put her body on this nude beach

I for one Welcome our New Overlo... hang on a minute, haven't I met you lot before? But of course (slaps forehead)... The Evil Patriarchs! Come on in fellas, cup of tea? How's that whole Oppressing the Shit out of Wimminkind going?

[–]GooseAttack42 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I read this like a Pokemon battle. Frat Boy's Ability "Male Gaze" activated! Frat Boy used "Rape Culture"! It was super effective! Loryn used "Cover Up". Loryn's Defense went up! Frat Boy used "Objectification!" It didn't have any effect...

[–]Mitschu 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Now, I've seen a thing or two that'd twist your hairs in my time, but nothing so curious as the time Loryn walked into my office.

The first thought that crossed my bemused brain was "How?" It answered itself shortly thereafter with a sarcastic "obviously, on her own two feet." I sized her up, making sure that my gaze took in every inch of her presented to me. It didn't take long.

She paced the small room, hands clenched together, eyebrows furrowed, lips a line so thin you couldn't fit a razor blade between them. I suspected I knew what she was going to say before that sharp mouth even started to open.

"Lemme guess, you've lost your body?" I interjected drolly, gesturing towards her neck down to her feet - or rather, where her neck down to her feet were conspicuously absent.

"Please don't manterrupt me." She essayed into the room coldly, giving me my first taste of her voice. A sound like a prepubescent choir boy whose nuts were caught in a series of mice traps that wouldn't stop snapping, I found I didn't care much for it. Particularly since I had heard that exact tone multiple times during the Femquisition, when that had been their torture tactic of choice.

"Someone stole my body, and I want you to find it." She clarified suddenly, breaking my train of thought.

"Anything to go on? Did you get a look at the man?" I asked curiously.

"How did you know it was a man?" She barked, instantly suspicious. I shrugged nonchalantly.

"Now, just because I've never seen a case precisely like this, doesn't mean I ain't familiar with how the Patriarchy operates." I returned calmly. She relaxed at that, taking a seat and some weight off her body - well, insofar as she could.

I sized her up again - still woefully aware of how inappropriate that saying was at this particular time. I didn't see a purse, and she didn't have that many places to hide money. I decided to approach this in a more delicate fashion, simply taking a couple of greasy dollars out of my wallet and lining them up on the table, indicating my standard rate for a case like this.

Like a parlor magician wringing stones from cloth, she meticulously made coins appear from the strangest and least feasible places, dropping them onto the bills with a grimace. I didn't have to count it myself, but I did so anyway to buy some time. Naturally, it was $0.77 on every male dollar.

I nodded, satisfied that she had paid the same equal rate I charged men, and swept them into the jar to the side. I tented my fingers under my chin, locking my eyes confidently with a spot a few inches to the right of hers. "Alright. Let's talk oppression."

[–]MalibuStayZ 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Once in the car, she starts reading Jessica Valenti‘s Sex Object and starts crying

I can relate to her.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

sounds to me like nobody oogled. in my experience, men just run their eyes right pass ugly women. they judge very quickly. this woman just felt bad because she knows she's ugly. even she admitted she's struggled with it but lies that she "conquered" it.

[–]theREALbombedrumbum 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This was the first and last time I look at a promoted "story" on Snapchat (something like a week ago IIRC).

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

compliments = oppression

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And nary an instance of eye rape.
