Woman working on STEM classes here. I made a post in TwoX last semester about this very thing. I had observed that the campus was basically separated one half STEM one half social "sciences" and it was a clear gender seperation. Not because women weren't welcome, I'm treated like an equal in both respect and responsibility. Women just don't seem to be interested in doing the work involved. Anyway, my post was down voted to the bowels of the Internet over there. But yeah, you aren't the only one whose noticed.

Women have been steered away from STEM for the past 100 years by the feminist narrative itself which never saw a potential to effect social change through an engineering field.

The only engineering they're interested in is social engineering.

It's a long pipeline that really starts at birth - at least the non-biological part. The end of the pipeline is basically college - and then comes the job. Women argue that girls are steered away from STEM long before college. Personally I think it's a mixture of those pressures and what women want. I work in software and frankly it's a very antisocial activity. Come to work, sit down, code, and leave. I can easily go the whole day without talking to a single person. Personally, I think that women prefer to be more social on an individual level, and few like that kind of social environment.

I'm in manufacturing. It's an doable two year degree for anyone. Their are zero women in my program. The only women on the technology building are in the nurses program and the dentists assistant program

correction: women don't go into STE fields

Mathematics has no issues with gender parity in the modern world, despite people's instance that women's are put off from math. Go to any mathematics conference, and it is blaring obvious it doesn't have a gender disparity.

Always note which end of a given problem's life-cycle Feminists apply their fixes to. It's usually not the cause, it's the more inefficient part: the effect. This is where the worst dollar-to-outcome ratio lives, and it's where Feminists make their careers. There will never be enough dollars to spend at the end of a problem pipeline to achieve Feminists' desired outcomes. But there will be enough to support the lifelong careers of Feminist "activists", "advocates", and "advisors"; i.e. hucksters. The problems persist, of course, and these people make money year after year promising solutions to issues they are financially, socially, and psychologically incentivized not to solve and couldn't solve if they wanted to.

The teacher who encourages kids year after year to go into science and do the hard work makes $40,000 if they're lucky and have a powerful union. The arch-Feminist who produces constant, pointless "Women in STEM" seminars for women who are already in STEM and ~~extorts~~ encourages school/businesses to promote and fund them can make that much money in a week spent at a sunny resort.

Feminists won't solve - can't solve - the problems they complain about. They often can't even accurately describe the problem or prove one exists. But they can make a lucrative career out of the complaining.

Follow the money.

Technically i have a nursing degree but I've been working in IT for most of my career; (so far nearly 9 years in IT vs about 2 years doing direct health care); I have never felt that there was any barrier in place keeping me out of IT, I took several STEM classes in college because I was interested enough to take them as electives or just 'extra' courses and they have been far more beneficial to me than any of my nursing courses.

The only "Barrier" is the choices we make. any woman that has the aptitude and desire to pursue a STEM career can be just as successful as a man.

Anecdotal from an engineering student here. I counted 2 American women out of about 200 students in the engineering program I'm studying in. The foreign students balance is much better about 2/3 are men and 1/3 women. Worth noting also is that in my STEM courses I'd say professors have been 50/50 men and women.

When I went to med school 60-70% of my fellow students were women. You could notice a similar flow of women into psychology, biology and life sciences, which were all in the same campus. Men were clearly in the minority there. It just seemed that those fields were more attractive to women, which I never considered to be a problem. I don't think anyone went into those fields because they couldn't get into other fields.

The argument here is that social and cultural pressures discourage women from even making the attempt. That we have pipeline directing women to do "women's work" and men to do "men's work".

This is not an invalid argument, there is in fact a great deal of merit to this argument. The problem is that the correction for this gender divide in pipelines is only addressed in ways that benefit women. "Women in STEM" initiatives address 25% of the problem. We also need "Men in CARE fields" and teaching women the value of "stay at home dads" and getting more men to act as homemakers.

The 5:1 ratio of men to women in STEM is due in some notable degree to gendered expectations of child care. If we are to address this issue, addressing the 300:1 ratio of women to men in homemaking is the bigger mountain to climb.
