'I was talking to someone the other day and they said if it were men who had periods then this policy would have been brought in sooner.

Yes, because the world is known to bend over backwards for the comfort of the common non-1% men, right?

[–]tallwheel 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. It's ridiculous that everyone seems to have this false perception about human nature.

Sick-of-their-shit-leave more like it.

Devils advocate here:

It's an equity vs equality thing. It's all the rage in education right now. Women have a recurring hormonal issue sometimes not well suited for the workplace that men physiologically don't suffer from. An extra day off for them may drastically increase their mood the following day and eliminate potential disagreements between coworkers...where as the recurring day off for men would not have the same degree of effects.

That being said, enough women in the world obviously make it through without this being an issue so I think it's a poorly applied case of equity (e.g. all of the boxes going to the shortest kid in the above photo). I have yet to decide where I draw the line on when equity measures are okay to introduce in law/corporate rules....but probably when physical differences between people are causing measurable differences in performance.

Irritable Male Syndrome is something that is being looked at in humans.

[–]Tmomp 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Are they saying that men are more predictable and dependable than women? Is there any other way to interpret this?

Are they installing fainting couches?

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Point to self: Do not employ women of menstruating age.

[–]intensely_human[🍰] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Or just pay them for their time: 75% of what you pay those without period leave.

[–]socialinjusticewar 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Silly that's discrimination.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes maybe, but at least my business will survive.

[–]socialinjusticewar 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not after emperor Hillary shuts it down for turning away a female applicant it won't.

[–]Ovendice 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

That's awesome! So that means women will be out of the office even MORE than they already are, meaning all the promotions will go to men!

In fact, why don't you females just stay at home ... full time? You're not doing anything anyway, just get in the way and just make false accusations trying to file phony lawsuits. You won't be missed.

[–]geniice 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

So that means women will be out of the office even MORE than they already are

Nope

"Co-Exist in Bristol says women will be allowed to take time off during their period and make up the time later."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-35700213

so just a form of flextime.

[–]Ovendice 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Trust me, they won't be making up that time. I deal with women in offices all day, everyday and have been for years. They will find any excuse they can to not come in.

[+]geniice -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So refreshing to see some good old fashioned sexist stereotyping in this PC age.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women statistically take more time off than men, even if they are single and have no kids. More sabbaticals, longer LTD and STD, more sick days, more family days, etc.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is a charity "social community group Coexist".

[–]socialinjusticewar 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

After paying them more than the men to make up for the "pay gap".

24 of 31 staff are female. You're going to let 24 staff off at the same time when their cycles sync up? Good luck.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Christ. Did you read the article? Women are told they're okay to pull a sickie if their period makes them feel so ill they can't come in to work. Not, have a week off every month.

[–]houseaddict 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think that's fine in all honesty, so long as the men are entitled to call in at a similar frequency when they just don't feel up to it as well then there is no problem.

[–]SchalaZeal01 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But its paid leave, if I could take paid days off no-questions-asked, I'd fake the inability. And I'm not alone there to prefer hobby time to work time.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Whats really funny about this is women who work together tend to sync up their cycles, if there are 4 women in an office they are all menstruating during the same week.

So if this catches on it will effectively create 'patriarchy weeks' for for each participating business, all the men will look forward to that week for its relaxed atmosphere and satisfying productivity.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, they don't.

Considering my manager and supervisor are the only young women, and also the least liked in our department, I'm all in favor of Patriarchy period leave.

[–]yummyluckycharms 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is a great signaling effect to know which companies males shouldnt work for. After all, why would you work at a company like that, knowing that you also wouldn't get promoted due to their misandry.

[–]GreasedLightning 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Paid leave? Damn, that's a little overboard. Maybe if it's something they need to take time off for, you could take a quarter out of their entire pay. To make up for the losses.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Aren't they arguing the point women aren't suited for the work environment? Their bodies are so feeble and hormonal it's a wonder any work gets done during that time of the month. Just stay home cause you ain't contributing to society like a sanitation worker. Your media computer jobs are pointless.

[–]v573v 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dear Female Employee,

Great news! The company views you as a liability once a month so stay the fuck home with your bitchy, irritable, overly emotional problem, also, tummy pains!

We don't want you here.

Thank fuck this isn't a government funded thing.

[–]andejoh 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

yet.

[–]cmumford 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As long as this is a company decision then I'm more-or-less OK with this. Let's say that worse case each woman takes one day per month. So that's 77% of her employees working 5% less per month - basically a loss of 3.9% of her employee work hours - but not a drop in expenses.

Assuming there are no limits (like maximum hours) then each employee would work about one day (six hours) per month extra. The women would get (again on average) eight of these hours back, for a net -2 hr./mo. reduction, and the men, not taking that time off, would have an increase to their hours of ~6 hr./mo. I'm assuming that because the article brought up "fairness" that the men would also need to pick up this slack.

I don't know if the men are salaried or hourly, but if they are now working approximately eight hours per month more than their female counterparts, possibly with no increase in salary or benefits, then that doesn't sound very fair, but the market forces should take care of that. The men will likely move to a different company, and the company will then have a sustained extra 5% overhead - which is actually a whole lot.

If this becomes law then that eliminates the market pressures, which would really suck for us men.
