I wonder what actions the school is taking to teach girls to show respect to boys.

None.

“I like it because the boys have a chance to be chivalrous to girls,” said Alaysah Fralin, 10. “Ladies should be treated like ladies. A man should be nice to a woman ... ”

“No matter what,” chimed in Rubi Martinez, 10, from the next seat.

I'm guessing not a whole lot.

“No matter what,” chimed in Rubi Martinez, 10, from the next seat.

Yeah, it was the "no matter what" that hit the spot for me as well. Says it all.

I wonder

You know the answer.

[–]zulu127[S] 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sadly, yes.

I wonder what actions the school is taking to teach girls to show respect to boys.

… or what action the school is taking to teach the black kids to respect the white kids.

Can you imagine?

[–]soulless_ging 16 points17 points18 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Dear lord. The standing at the table is ridiculous, and everyone should hold doors for others, and do their part in chores at home.

The idea that you're doing it "for women" and not "because you should respect everyone and do your part" is terrible.

Who on earth at that school thinks this is a good mindset to instill in children, and how do they expect it to "transfer to the girls" if they're teaching them that the boys are responsible for their comfort?

[–]zulu127[S] 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It seems to me that it would give the girls a sense of superiority to the boys since they are being pandered to by these poor brainwashed guys.

I also wonder how many of these boys are thinking, "this is bullshit". Of course their views would never be printed.

[–]xNOM 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Who on earth at that school thinks this is a good mindset to instill in children, and how do they expect it to "transfer to the girls" if they're teaching them that the boys are responsible for their comfort?

The entire (mostly female) teaching staff, I would wager.

When it comes to manners and customs, there are equally old norms that would have all the younger kids standing for the older ones, regardless of gender. The school knows everyone's birthday and relative ranking, they tell the kids and everyone knows who's senior to them and acts accordingly.

Chivalry must die because it kills.

[–]zulu127[S] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

All these customs seem to reinforce the idea of class and superiority of certain select groups just because of who they are or when they were born rather than what they have accomplished.

[–]blueoak9 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's one way of looking at it. People in those cultures might say that the chances are that someone older than you is going to have accomplished more, or is going to have been instrumental in setting you up to accomplish something. But mostly the way people seem to experience these customs is as deference they pay to senior members of their lineage or family, in other words to themselves as members of that family. The issue of who has accomplished more means less when the basic unit is that family unit rather than the individual. It's a matter of what cultural norms you grew up with.

Women/girls are goddesses and us lowly males need to treat them as such. Seriously shit like this makes me hate all degrees of chivalry.

[–]Mitschu 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You know, chivalry is one of those words that doesn't mean what people use it to mean.

I don't normally mind, but this is a school. It's reflective of their education quality that they're teaching children en masse to use the wrong word to describe their actions.

Yeah, yeah, I know gallantry is pretty much dead, and has been subsumed by chivalry, in the mainstream's vogue. This isn't the mainstream, this is a school. Schools are the place where the distinction between meanings should be explored, not ignored.

The only time a place of education should be teaching chivalry to young boys is when they're also issuing them horses, swords, and suits of armor to practice said chivalry with each other.

Likewise, the only time a place of education should be teaching gallantry to young boys is when they're also teaching the matching etiquette to young girls. If young boys are to stand respectfully until the girls have sat, then the young girls should respectfully never speak in mixed company unless a boy specifically invites them to do so. (Wait, what are they even doing in school in the first place? Burn those heathen witches!)

Somehow, I don't see that particular aspect of traditionalism taking off well.

[–]Maschalismos 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What is the difference between gallantry and chivalry, in this context? Honestly curious.

[–]Mitschu 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Chivalry is a code of warfare conduct for (mostly) knights and (sometimes) militiamen. "Never strike a fallen foe" and "never attack while your enemy has their back to you" are chivalrous acts. The root is Old French, chevalerie, literally "the code of horsemen."

Gallantry is a code of social conduct for all men in general, mostly extended to / enforced by the upper class. "Pull out a lady's seat for her" and "always offer her your coat when it is cold" are gallant acts. Old French as well, galanterie, loosely "the code of courteous attention to women."

BBC News: School sends teenage boys for etiquette lessons

The reporter starts by asking the girls, who we understand to be princesses who don't need any etiquette lessons, what they think of their male classmates. They're smelly and uncouth, say the princesses. So the boys are sent off to learn how to wash behind their ears and the right way to bow and scrape to a princess.

So the important questions are: If the girls are believed to be princesses, then are the boys believed to be princes? Or are they at least frogs who can be turned into princes with a little kindness and attention? Or are they just churls who are being dressed up to meet their social betters?

https://dalrock.wordpress.com/2012/12/26/how-the-feminine-imperative-just-happens/

I noticed my daughters cutting into the front of the line at the buffet table, along with all the other AHGirls, and I heard one of the older Boy Scouts loudly instructing the cubs to stay back and let the girls go through the buffet line first. The girls all looked a bit startled by this but, faced with a long table full of treats, happily skipped right up to the front with nary a backward glance…

The thing is, no girl asked or appeared to expect to go through the food line first, though they also didn’t object to doing so (they also didn’t thank the boys). It was the boys who were enforcing this on one another, and they were doing it very proudly.

... it is very natural for men to look after women, and this has always been the case. Indeed, this natural protectiveness men have for women is part of the mechanism which leads to the feminine imperative. However, it is only part of the mechanism. The other side is vehement objection to reciprocity, and this very much does come from women. To the casual observer the scene Sunshine Mary describes where men defer to women and the women don’t bother thanking them (or truly even appreciating the gesture) seems to “just happen”.

... The reality is that women’s passivity is far more superficial than it appears. ... She can easily test this by coaching one of the boys to suggest that the girls show some reciprocal form of deference to the boys during a future celebration. Perhaps the girls should serve the boys refreshments during their next celebration...

If this is suggested the lie of the girls’ passivity will come out in force. It won’t come out in the form of a logical reaction, even if on the surface it appears to start that way. For example, they are likely to bristle at the idea of having their moxie damaged by deferring to the boys, and make a feminist argument for equality. However, if this is simply about equality one could then propose that instead of serving the boys the girls have the boys go first through the treat line, and agree to take turns at this from here on.

At this point the reality of the feminine imperative will become evident, because while the girls were seemingly passive when everything was going their way, any deviance from this will be met with emotional outbursts. Whoever proposes either true equality or simple reciprocity will become the object of great irrational anger, and at this point the passivity turns to aggression. While the girls (and their mothers) won’t know why they are so angry, they will know that whoever proposed such a thing is a terrible person.

Chivalry only comes from a position of strength

The common view of chivalry today is placing men in a subservient position in society. One of the automatically generated wordpress links on the bottom of my first post on chivalry was from a homeschooled young man who believes that his role as a man is to protect any woman who lacks the sense to come in out of the rain

We now live in a society where a girl can walk outside, in the pouring rain, without a coat or umbrella and is no one offers their own coat or umbrella.

... young men as personal bodyguards and valets for modern young women ... This farcical view is so common that it is hard to even imagine a scenario where chivalry might have some nobility to it. To see the potential for nobility we need to consider what knights were. Knights were powerful armed men of generally high economic and social status. An act of kindness or deference by such a man to someone weaker or lower in status to him is gracious in nature because of the real and immediate ability he possessed to do otherwise.

The powerful appeal to chivalry also lies in the contrast. However, the feminists and the white knight boot licker brigade want to appeal to the power of the contrast (the bait) while substituting an obligation of subservience in its place (the switch). I think most of us sense this in our gut, and many of the commenters on my last post articulated this problem quite well. However, I strongly suspect those advocating chivalry as male obligation haven’t really considered the feminist water they are carrying. They are only repeating the anti male slogans they have been drilled in since birth.

[–]zulu127[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Interesting about the passivity concept. I have, in the past, made suggestions that men go first instead of the women and have gotten some pretty nasty reactions and numerous "stink eyes".

[–]thegreyhoundness 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good stuff.

[–]HotZone_ 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

These people don't seem to understand the concept of chivalry. It was a two way street. Men treated women like ladies (indeed practically like royalty) on the condition that they acted like ladies.

This is yet another example of feminists demanding that they retain all the benefits of their traditional gender role while men are not only denied said benefits but openly attacked as oppressors. Sickening.

[–]Mitschu 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Men treated women like ladies (indeed practically like royalty) on the condition that they acted like ladies.

As I posted above, the strictures of etiquette for women were just as harsh as the strictures of gallantry for men.

A true lady never speaks in mixed company until invited to do so by one of the men present, unless addressing her waiting-servant. Just as it is uncouth for a man to presume his comfort comes before a woman's, it is undignified for a woman to expose men to her idle chatter and gossip.

Hence, any man who is asked to uphold the traditional standards, has a built in retaliation. "Shut up." Literally, that's their half of the bargain.

[–]FigNinja 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Even when engaging in conversation, to be anything less than kind, complementary, and uncontroversial would be a transgression.

[–]richardnorth 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The school administrators are scum. Chivalry is a two way street. Obviously the girls won't be expected to reciprocate. This isn't chivalry, it's subservience. Chivalry is dead, and most modern women aren't worthy of it.

[–]redditorriot 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Systematic indoctrination of boys to defer to girls. This is frankly disgusting institutionalized sexism.

[–]ZimbaZumba 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Parents need to complain load and clear about this.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Poor idea. Teach them to be nice and polite to everyone, not just women and certainly not in such a prostrating manner.

[–]Rethgil 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This kind of thing sickens me. Talk about indoctrination with the worst kind of dogma. May as well start pinning badges on boys now saying "2nd class citizen". It has no place in a world where we are supposed to consider each gender as "equal". Not better, not worse, but equal. Perhaps they need to teach the girls and the teachers that. Also the kids parents too.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

has started showing chivalry at home by holding doors, washing dishes and warming up food

Hmm that doesn't sound like chivalry. Unless they meant he holds the door open for her and in return she prepares him a snack then does the washing up. But I'm sure that's not what they meant.

[–]v573v 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Girls can't endure even trivial hardships now?

Old fashioned?

A few centuries ago those girls and boys would be working in victorian coal mine for 18 hours a day.

[–]MRA-automatron-2kb 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In other posts men are being sent to university and workplace re education classes for holding open a door or making a compliment. (head spinning) Why can't women make up their minds as to what they want.

[–]trygold2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

So they have to stand when the girls bring them their lunch that sounds fair.

[–]augustfell 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not sure where I stand on this one. Stand, get it?

[–]Bwhitty23 -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And the cycle continues.

[–]RagingFuckalot -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Waiting for the moment men remember that it was men that came up with the bullshit idea of chivalry and for men to stand up for women, pull out their chairs etc.
