There seems to be growing suspicion that the 4chan post was just a troll (apparently "I'm gonna commit x illegal act" posts happen there daily).

CNN is talking about "beta males" who are "virgins" and "losers." Ironically, this is precisely the social attitude that manifests in spree shootings. Feminists do it all the time, incidentally, when they refer to "neckbeards" who "can't get laid" and "live in their mother's basement."

The hard truth is that we are apathetic to the problems a small but growing set of the population has.

People who have Autism, Aspergers, anti-social personality disorder, and/or neurosis need a structured social support system. They need help to maintain friends, get jobs, and to maintain a "normal" life.

The problem then is only partially a mental health one, because locking people up and doping them full of drugs doesn't solve the problem, it hides the symptoms.

"Normal" society is still very tribal and looks down on outcasts. Sometimes this leads to the individuals feeling cornered and they resort to attacking the system.

Sometimes they have reasons for picking certain victims, but almost always they are attacking a nebulous institution. It effectively gives them a sense of control that they have never had in life.

Anyone who blames guns is only taking a very shallow look at the problem, because mass killings do happen with blades, blunt weapons, poison gases, fire, explosives, etc.

I expect these events to continue happening as long we treat social outcasts as sub-human.

The problem here is not "toxic masculinity" but gynocentric masculinity. Judging a man by his ability to get laid will lead to all sorts of assholes being regarded as "successful" and all sorts of good, decent men being regarded as "losers." Most men will just withdraw from society, but a small number will lash out with violence.

Assuming this guy was the self-described "beta male" in question and not motivated by some other grievance, here are three ways to increase the likelihood of more such shootings in the future: referring to such people as pathetic virgin losers, talking about "male sexual entitlement", and pontificating about "toxic masculinity." Focussing exclusively on mental health and gun control won't help either. What these young men need are a positive self image where they have some degree of respect from their peers and tangible social support.

Mens' Rights here is on Reddit, the 10th most visited web site in America, with over 120,000 forum members. If someone wants to pretend a random nut who may have posted here (as 1 in 120,000) is typical of us then I bet we can find proof that Faecbook is an incubator for virtually every crime known.

The shooter was quoted during the shooting as making people state their religious affiliation. This sounds to me like he was a religious nut.

Another mentally unstable mass murderer... and again people will probably search everywhere for blame - masculinity, gun laws, video games, and so on. When will society learn to place blame on the sorry state of mental health care in the US and take action to make help available for people like this?

BTW I'm aware of how 4chan works, how those commenters are a mix of nihilists and teenage kids who think everything on the internet is a joke... but I still can't help but think how fucked up it is when someone posts a message like that and all the responses are encouraging him to do it, giving him advice on how to plan it, telling him to go for a "high score", and all of that.

I get that 4chan isn't the place you go for helpful advice from mature and caring people, but damn. 10 innocent people died today, and the last people to talk to the killer gave him tips like it's a damn video game.

I wish these guys doing the shootings would ask us first who we recommend shooting. We get dozens of people asking for help with a school essay, but nobody asks for help with their school shooting.

Has anyone done any research on the proportion of these shooters who were circumcised as infants? I bet there is a positive correlation between the two things.
