Are you male? If so you should talk to the professor, saying you are considering making a sexual harassment complaint. Tell them that their actions are sexist and create a hostile environment for you as a male by making it appear as if only men are assholes, which has a chilling effect on you and your education.

The attempt to redefine the word 'sexism' is a straight out of Orwell's 1984. The word is being given a new and specific meaning whilst retaining the emotional weight of it original meaning. This is intellectually dishonest.

The structure of our language is such that Sexism means discrimination on the basis of sex, period.

Trying to fight a teacher directly could make your grades worse. You'll have to decide if that if is worth it.

You may not want to try to fight this directly. You could ask whether the definition should include transgender. If it should include transgender, ask if it should include those transitioning from male to female. As a follow up, ask if it should include transition from female to male. Ask if a female transitioning to a male that uses the male pronoun should be included in the definition.

These questions always blow their minds. Of course, the definition SHOULD include everyone; but most people have not really thought about how a prejudice definition will be implemented.

I am a male. I worked as a confirmation caller for a window company that sends sales reps. out to appointments generated by telephone solicitations.

All you need to know about my job (to understand what happened) is this, I had a group of people that went out to appointments everyday - often multiple appointments within a single day - and they had a territory that was almost 100 miles from one side to the other. I was supposed to assaign appointments in relation to where they lived, and proximity to possibly later appointments.

~in other words, there was nothing random about where a salesman went that day, it was part of my job duties to assaign it in a logical fashion that allowed him to do multiple appointments if possible~

Back when I did this it was the late 90's. We didn't have Google Maps. What I had was a map that was located by a secretaries desk posted to the wall. This map had my entire territory on it. The map was central to how I performed this function of my job.

Well, the secretary took a liking to me. I did not return the feelings. In fact, I found her kind of repulsive. It started with her flirting and me trying to be polite but brush her off to her actually grabbing my ass everytime I used the map.

Every, damned, time. I could count on it.

I had a problem, I didn't know what to do about it. I decided to start guessing my salesmen's - er, people's - routes.

Exactly what you think would happen happened. They got pissed. Normally they where happy with my decisions, but after a week they revolted and started complaining to my boss.

So my boss calls me into HER office one day. She says, 'I fired the secretary.'. I replied back, 'Ummm.... okay.... what does that have to do with me?'. She says, 'I saw everything. You were being sexually harassed. You shouldn't have to put up with that.'.

Point is, this is a gender neutral problem. And it is a problem. If your sociology teacher truly doesn't believe men can be harrased, have her send me an IM. I would be happy to arrange a telephone conversation with her and tell her my story personally.

I'll tell you this, I am not a special butterfly. There is nothing 'unique' about what happened to me. Except, possibly, the part about having a boss that looked out for me and called someone on the carpet on my behalf. She was a good one.

My sociology teacher is a nice woman, i do not want to make a production about it. On the other hand, i have a super feminist English teacher. She made us go to six different feminist talks this semester. All of them were over an hour long.

The power a professor wields is such that it might be more prudent to keep your head down and instead prepare a very well-worded and well thought out review of the class for when assessments are parsed out at the end of the semester. I don't know about your school, but where I'm from those get read by the people who determine whether or not to tenure someone.

You need to send a written complaint to the principal stating that you feel the teacher is pushing her own ideology onto students which is unacceptable for a teacher. Do not give your name. State that you are remaining anonymous because you don;t want your grades to be jeopardized. This isn't just about you, you are representing all male students.

I am a sociology instructor and I can tell you this is not right. In fact, every sociology book that I have read or own (to best of my knowledge), indicates sexual harassment as being unwanted sexual advances made by one individual to another, or something along those lines. In any rate they have been very gender/sex neutral with defining it, which they should be. Could I ask the question on if this is actually in your textbook as a definition? Or is this your instructor "defining" this? If it is your instructor defining this and not the book, I am sorry you have to be instructed by that person and also, in my opinion, a report should be made. If it is your book defining it this way, I would like to know the name of the book and author/s as this should actually be reported to the ASA, as this is an improper definition of sexual harassment. I know you have the power point point picture posted, however, some instructors just copy and paste from the book on the power point, which is the reason for me asking if it is coming from your instructor or coming from the book? Also, what class is this? Intro to sociology? Social Problems? Inequality?
