It's all bullshit anyway. The biggest companies in America donate to both parties, because they don't give a fuck about ideology; they just want to cover both bases. Foreign policy, economy, domestic spending... We don't get a say in any of it. This is why I don't vote; it's a waste of time. Just make money and improve your life. That's all you can do.

This is why I consider making the US house a parlimentary list election system to be a mens right issue. With 4 parties, we can negotiate with someone. With two parties, we're fucked.

The extremism in both parties, the corporate control over both parties, and the inability to do anything about it are the natural endgame for our terrible first-past-the-post voting system that has no term limits.

It ensures that only two parties will ever matter - you aren't allowed to vote for the best candidate, because not voting for the least shitty candidate will ensure that the most shitty candidate wins.

It encourages extremism - you win your party's nomination by rallying the "base", the extremist voters who are the majority of the people who bother to show up for primaries.

There's no punishment for lack of co-operation and lack of progress. There's no penalty for failure. In fact there's the opposite... obstructionists are REWARDED in their next election by voters who are happy that they stopped the other team from doing things their way.

Then there's the electoral college, which ensures that nearly half of Americans have their vote count for absolutely nothing in the Presidential election, encouraging voters in every non-swing state to stay home and not bother, because if you're a Texas Democrat or New York Republican, your vote will mean nothing. Only a handful of states determine the outcome of every election, candidates don't even need to show up to campaign in most of the country.

Not only that, there's unequal representation. Citizens of Wyoming have far more representation per person that citizens of California. Fairness? Treating everyone's vote equally? Who would want that?

To fix it, we're going to need to introduce runoff voting, get rid of the electoral college, and redesign how representation in Congress works. Good fucking luck doing that in a country where we can't even get rid of the penny.

I'm not American and from an Eastern culture, so here's my outsider viewpoint: The problem with American politics is that it is partisan.

One of the core Chinese beliefs is Daoism, which advocates natural order and that everything is abhorrent at extremes - the school of thought says that being liberal or being conservative all the time is silly and inflexible - just like there are times when you will need to wear a coat and times you will need to take it off, people should be liberal when it is required and people should be conservative at others. It's only logical to me, but maybe that's because of my culture. I think it'd be nice if America was 80% independent and maybe 10% Democrat and Republican, but that won't really happen anytime soon because of all the media and cultural narratives.

I find it pretty sad when liberal people mock gay Republicans, for example. I'm pretty sure nobody becomes one without thinking very carefully about it.
