I read elsewhere that the pay gap existed because many of the men got a bonus for working on a statistics project. No females worked on the project, therefor they didn't get the bonus.

This teaches us that if men work really hard and make some extra money, women will get paid more to keep things equal.

This is Simpson's Paradox at play as the statistics were looked at as a whole. Inequities will now been introduced all over campus. The question that has to be addressed is - is this disparity due to gender or area of expertise?

The Faculty Union has a legal duty to this fight this initiative.

2%....I wonder what the margin of error was in the statistics because any time you compound factors together like this you generate a margin of error due to it not being directly like-to-like. I can't imagine it being smaller than 4 or 5 percent.

This is just a shitty way for upper middle class academics to give themselves a pay raise that can't be argued without you looking like the bad guy. Also it's a flat lie that it won't end up in the tuition costs eventually, otherwise you have to admit there is a million dollar operating surplus.

Lower wage support staff ought to be all over this. Give it to them if you want to show you are trying to be equitable.

Man, I really wonder where this is going to stop. When someone will stand up and shake some sense into everyone.

The study couldn't determine whether the gap — which the university says amounted to $3,515 — was "greater in some faculties than others or whether there was a systematic difference as a function of rank."

So there's a 2% difference, which is small enough that you could attribute it to statistical error.

And then on top of that, their study couldn't find out whether or not it was a difference based on discrimination or based on experience ("rank").

But rather than actually investigating further, they basically just said "fuck you" to all of the guys who likely put in more work than the women who got paid that much less, giving the women the money without having to work for it at all.

Yep, that's the best type of equality.

I say good for them. There existed a 2% (as opposed to 23%) wage gap. This is not only possible, but plausible. The reasons they cite as likely causes of a 2% gap include women not negotiating starting wages as well and discrimination in merit based raises. When talking about a 2% difference, these are perfectly valid.

If we could only get the debate about the wage gap to be about this 2% difference that is validly different pay for the same work, we could make real progress.
