Firstly: Apologize for the long story and possible extraneous details.

Early in my relationship with my now-girlfriend, we had a lengthy discussion about feminism. I won't list all the topics of discussion, but rather one particular case that I'm looking for feedback on. This discussion came about because earlier, I had mentioned to her that I wasn't a feminist. I informed her that I considered myself egalitarian, which she scoffed at, saying all the people she knew who called themselves egalitarians seemed to be sexist.

The issue of "catcalling" came up and sparked significant discourse.

My initial point was that catcalling is not a feminist issue, and for her to prove it was, she had to settle on a definition of feminism. Either feminism was about equality between men and women, or feminism was about women's issues. Either definition I'm okay with, but she seemed very dismissive of men's rights and egalitarianism as a concept.

She chose the definition that feminism is about equality.

I contended that because there was no issue of inequality (men can catcall women and women can catcall men) this was merely an issue of harassment that happened to be gendered. I did concede that catcalling was an issue, and that it primarily affected women.

In between a lot of "you couldn't possibly understand"s and "I can't believe this is what you think"s, I thought I had made a coherent point:

If feminism is about equality, catcalling is not a feminist issue, because there's no formal inequality. The fact that catcalling primarily happens to women merely means that the issue is gendered.

If feminism is about women's issues, catcalling is a feminist issue, but then not one that I need to be concerned about. While she can pursue a feminist agenda, I can and should be free to pursue a men's rights, or egalitarian agenda.

We ended on a stalemate, as she didn't agree that catcalling wasn't a feminist issue, and still believes there is a matter of inequality at play.

I'd post to the feminism subreddit, but I think I may get more open and honest feedback here.

Did I make a valid point? Am I missing something in my argument? Is there a better way to make this case?
