This is something that you really need to talk to a lawyer about. Assuming that you live in the US, the laws vary from state to state. I suspect that you will probably have to pay some kind of support for your ex, even if it is only a temporary thing.

You forced her to give up her lucrative career prospects to raise your child. Now you owe her income for an unspecified period of time. The fact that you supported her during those years has zero value.

You will be writing checks for alimony/spousal support that are unrelated to the checks you will be writing for child support.

You need to be talking to an attorney, like YESTERDAY. If you wait for her to file divorce, you've waited WAY too long. Just find a attoney that specializes in divorce for men, and go in for a consultation. You're not divorcing yet, you're just finding out what you can do to protect yourself if/when it happens.

Get legal councle. If divorce is in the cards, then she is working up to something to spring on you. In most places being the one to file for divorce gives you an upper hand. You will need this advantage as well as throwing a wrench into whatever plan she is concocting.

The courts are already stacked against you. If you want to eat more than Ramen noodles and ever see your kids NOW is the time to start fighting back.

I don't think that's a valid application for alimony. It's usually only applicable to pampered wives who have become used to it over a long period of time.

If she wants to work full time, you have to pay a proportion of child care costs.
