They are coping. My sister was not a shitty person but she was obese, unemployed and depressed when she met her husband. Decent looking, fit, tall lawyer. Same religion, good family too. The reason she got a lawyer husband while being such a terrible prospect herself is not solely her "fault". The guy who chose her must have his own issues, maybe he has depression, maybe he doesn't see his worth and that he is capable of getting better women, maybe he has a fetish for obese women, maybe he has a savior complex and so your cousin as a project "I can save her" kind of thing.
