My wife at the time, always spent every dime I had. It didn't matter how much money I made, so I didn't have savings. I was lucky to have a sister that loaned me 5K. Only took me 2-3 months to pay her back since I didn't have someone spending all the money. Also the lawyer gave me back some money.

Outside of residential paper, loans are tighter than a frog's ass in a crocodile pool right now. I wouldn't say that it is for a divorce. Let's call it "home improvement" (which is technically true).

I haven't had to pay the retainer yet as no on has filed and we are working on it. Should that day come I plan on getting a "divorce" credit card that will used specifically for paying everything involved and then I will clean that up on the backend.

I’m in NYC. Lawyer was $400/hour at the time. Was middle of the road (figured this wasn’t the time to go with the cheapest option). I did a combination of two $20k loans, $5k from family I’m still paying back, and he actually took credit cards, too. Perversely, the more debt I took on, the more they would give me. Loans is where I would go first.

I was about $100k in debt after the whole thing starting from basically no debt. I’m 18 months out now from Chapter 7 bankruptcy. It was all written off. I even have a $3,500 credit card again. Now… I didn’t need my credit score for anything. Never going to buy a home, for example. And I was damn lucky to qualify for Chapter 7 instead of Chapter 13.

Everyone’s experience is different here. I think I lucked out with reasonable judge and my ex-wife had a reasonable attorney that tempered her nature. (The scary stuff if when does things without an attorney and we end up back in court. And then it is thousands just to get it dismissed.)

For 50% time with my kid, worth every penny. I don’t know if everyone feels the same. Some paid what I did and ended up getting screwed.

My sister lent me money. In the end the lawyer cost me $2600 which is clearly a LOT less than most have had to pay. In my case I did all of the stuff that I could do on my own like negotiate with the ex and get her to commit to the deal. The lawyer filed everything and advised me along the way. The lawyer also made me sign a waiver that said the deal I struck wasn't in my best interest and that if I went to court I would get a better deal, but I didn't have the money to pay for court time, so I made a deal I could live with.

I guess it helped that my ex couldn't afford a lawyer otherwise I'm sure my story would be radically different.
