My wife (F29) recently filed for divorce and I (M29) am still trying to process it. We don't have any kids, and have been together collectively for about four years.
From my perspective, I was still trying. I believed that when things get hard in a marriage, you work through them. I was open to therapy, hard conversations, and taking accountability for my part. I thought that was what commitment meant. You stay and you fight for it.
There were moments where she mentioned therapy, or said she was struggling, and I held onto those moments as hope. I thought bringing up therapy meant there was still something there worth saving. I thought it meant she had not fully given up. I leaned into that hope harder than I probably should have. Looking back, I wonder if she was already halfway out the door while I was clinging to the idea that we could turn it around.
What I am starting to understand is that she may have emotionally left months before I realized what was happening. By the time she filed, she had already accepted the end. I was still in the middle of trying to save it. That disconnect has been one of the hardest parts. It feels like I was fighting for something that was already over in her mind.
On top of that, some friends I thought would stay neutral or supportive ended up distancing themselves and choosing her side. That part hurt in a way I was not prepared for. It felt like losing my marriage and parts of my support system at the same time. I went from having a partner and a circle to feeling very alone almost overnight.
I keep replaying everything in my head. If I was willing to hold on and work through it, why was she not? If therapy was on the table, why did it not matter in the end? Did I miss signs that she was already done? Or was I just holding onto hope because I was not ready to accept that she had changed her mind about us?
I still care about her. I would be lying if I said I do not. But I am also starting to realize that even if she came back months from now and said she wanted to try therapy again, I do not know if I could trust the stability of it. Something shifted when she chose to leave. The sense of safety I had is gone. I know I am not perfect. I am sure I contributed to our problems in ways I am still unpacking. But I also do not think I deserved to feel blindsided and alone at the end.
Right now it feels like I am grieving someone who is still alive. I go back and forth between hoping she changes her mind and telling myself that I need to let that hope go. I am trying to understand what healing looks like from here, especially when part of me is still waiting for a door that may never open again.
If anyone has been through something similar, I would appreciate honest perspective.
