You need to stop buying things and ideally get tangible assets off the balance sheet. For example, if you two have a $10,000 boat, and two cars worth $5000 and $10,000, all those are values on a balance sheet. You can try to split the assets so each gets an equal amount. But if you want the $10k car and the boat you will have to buy her out of her half of the car offset by the $5k car if she'll take it, AND her half of the boat. However, if you sold the boat today you can keep $5k, give her the other $5k, then give her $2500 for the $10k car. If you don't sell the boat then you have to come up with an extra $5k in cash. Therefore the more things you have the more you will owe her for. For me, I basically took my personal items and put them into a storage unit under somebody else's name. I gave her practically everything else so she couldn't demand me buy her out of anything. Plus I gave our boat away, it was cheaper than buying her out because I had no money.

Yes buy what you need now because if she keeps the furniture that’s an asset on her side .

So double check with your attorney. In most cases if you filed and are NOT using communal assets you can buy whatever you want, and any new debt is 100% yours. IF you are using communal assets then the new stuff is 50% hers. After I filed I bought: bed, furniture, ski equipment, etc. with MY income (completely separate from communal, she had court ordered temporary support making the line even more clear). Even took a few trips. Just be careful.

She emptied our personal line of credit ($20k) and maxed out the VISA (+$9.5k) and she had to pay that back at final settlement. Again, I had clearly documented that I used ZERO communal income / assets / debts. If you are just buying normal stuff to live it's unlikely to even come up because people need to live. But big purchases or shit she wants, just need to clearly show the money trail.
