Well the time is here and we are filing for divorce. The good news is, I have a post-nup protecting my pension, 401k, and stocks. I’ve only been at the job 5 years. They are relatively small, and we’ve only been married 5 years. Anyway, we live in a small town and across the street from my grandparents who are getting old and need a lot of help. My oldest is going to school locally and it’s a great school. Our house is decently small, but easily fits the four of us(2 daughters). We currently owe about $117,000 on the house. The house was appraised at about $220,000 last summer. If I wanted to stay in this house after the divorce, ideally obviously owe her around 50k to do so. I don’t think I can roll that into my mortgage, so I would have to somehow come up with that money elsewhere where(possible suggestions?). So basically I’ll be wrapped up in the house $170,000. The house is super old, but we have done a lot of updates, and still have a little room for more(finish the attic). I really don’t want to be locked into this house another 5-10 years if I do keep the house, but I almost feel like I have to because of where it is. I just feel like something big will happen to this house if I stay a lot longer and then I’ll be screwed as far as having any equity in it. Everywhere else would just feel like a lateral move. Even renting an apartment would be the same as my mortgage($900/month) if not more. I just don’t want to be house broke over such a small old house and not be able to move into something bigger with more land in 5 years or so. I bring in about $4400 monthly after taxes and have some other expenses like the debt that we will split probably 15k each, and my car (which I could sell and downgrade if I needed to)($400/month) and child support ($500?) and my school loan($350/month)I need some advice….
