Like any addict he is probably hoping something makes him stop. Because up until this point his wife hasn't, his age hasn't, his health hasn't, any negative career affects haven't. I'm sure he would like to believe that having a child to look after will stop him, but it's wishful thinking. The only person who can control and stop the addiction is the addict.

But he needs to do AA ASAP if they should continue this relationship and or if they want to have children together

I wish her the best. Being with an addict is so difficult and for that long to even think about ending the relationship is so hard.
