Don't drop your standards. Effort and being high-maintenance is the most effective filter you have against substandard relationships. And being on your own is far preferable to dulling your shine for weak, shitty dudes.

And I'd rather shit in my hands and then clap than be in the same room as a dude like this.

Just remember that "creep-shaming" is not a real thing and that you are allowed to make fun of creepy dudes who don't respect boundaries or choose to accept societal norms that safeguard women's wellbeing and comfort.

He doesn’t necessarily prefer that you “don’t wear makeup”: he’d just hate that you might expect anything from him.

I hate guys like this. The “you’re too good for me” guys. Or the ones constantly asking what you see in them. It’s all an ego boost for them.

If a man says that he can’t see why a woman would be interested in him- believe him. There are major major flaws and he’s literally telling on himself.

The most recent guy that I was talking to was like this. The whole "you're too beautiful/kind/talented etc. for me" spiel. I just agreed. He definitely convinced me! We don't talk anymore, obviously.

Men with these confidence issues are generally jealous and controlling and want you to change all the things about you that initially attracted them to you in the first place. No thank you. I want a confident man, a secure relationship where we feed off of each other's excellence. Not some dude who knows he dresses like shit (so easily fixed) who isn't proud of his passions. Ew.

Yes! And the guy in the post talking shit on himself for liking to fix things.. what?! I love a man who knows how to fix things!! I’ve definitely dated a couple of these guys. It’s important for a couple to build each other up. A man who needs constant reassurance is a selfish man. Those guys rarely say nice things about their gfs and even if they do it’s all centered around THEM and how they are lacking. It’s not a compliment at all. Rather, you’re too good for me and it bothers me so I’m thinking of ways to tear you down.

There’s an implication in that rhetoric that attractive women only care about looks. The subtext is “women only go for chads. Not guys like me in a stable career who have useful skills”

Edit to add: imagine being with this guy, finding out he’s only with you because he thinks you’re mediocre.

Literally my ex. He often said he was lucky to have me, and turns around and be a control freak with anxiety/anger issues.

Never again.

I definitely haven't always had the highest standards, but consistent validation seeking has always been a deal breaker for me. It's just EXHAUSTING.

Yep! Pre FDS days I had a guy I was dating and after the first time we were physical (it was good) he got really down on himself and was freaking out about his performance. He did this weird thing where he said “it’s not like you came.” When I had in fact finished. I broke up with him because I knew I couldn’t handle his bullshit. I didn’t want to have to deal with a meltdown every time we had sex.

[–]pm_me_your_molarsPickmeisha™️17 points18 points19 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ugh, thankfully I haven't been in THAT situation. And even if the sex is good the first time, you're not going to be able to enjoy yourself the second time if you have the expectation of that kind of meltdown hanging over your head.

Perhaps he expected milk to come out of your nipples? 😅

Where were you when I was 21? I spent the better part of a year constantly reassuring this nvm that, yes, he was good enough for me... and then boom: then the real bad behaviors kicked in. He tried to warn me but I didn’t get it.

[–]ginellwiththewindFDS Newbie13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s okay! I often wonder where FDS was when I was 21.

It honestly feels so good knowing I’m never going back to those kinds of guys. I’m grateful for the lessons I’ve learned. It’s hard to not look back and be mad at yourself but have compassion for that 21 year old woman. Society basically conditions us to accept poor treatment from men. I’m just so happy that so many women are breaking the cycle.

I unmatched a Hinge dude for some “wow I really didn’t think I’d match with you” bullshit. I’m not giving you validation, bub.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes and he will turn it against you as well. Don’t date men who are not good enough for you. They also know and will act accordingly.

Anyone else want to do this, but towards their NV family members?

I feel like us women should also remember not to take this shit from NV/LV tendency friends, family and coworkers/acquaintances too.

For me, I have extended family members with narc tendencies who I've realised have been negging me and lowkey putting me down for a very long time. I almost wonder if this is why I put up with so much shit from my negging ex as well. I built such a tolerance by lowering the standards of the type of behaviour I accepted, that I put up with shades of the same behaviour from the guy I dated.

/u/basedbecky, where'd you find this? I tried googling but nothing came up.

*shudder* I've dated a man like this. Who would constantly ask "why would someone so beautiful date me?"

The relationship was RIFE with jealousy and he was convinced that every single male in my life was involved with me. It was toxic and unhealthy and he really made me feel guilty about having male friendships that I've had for years.

This was when I was new to dating and inexperienced.... GOD I hope nobody has to go through that, but statistically, I know someone out there is going through it and I just hope it doesn't last.
