How I feel seeing a “Hey How have things been?” Message from my Ex

I remember my abusive ex sending me a long message TWO YEARS after he ghosted me saying how sorry he was. How he wanted to apologise for all his cruelty and give himself "peace of mind". So thankful my stronger willed sister hovered over me like a hawk and made me compose a glib, disinterested message instead of the sweet reply my naive pickme self would have liked to send.

I didn't have FDS back then. Now I know the correct response is block & delete for my peace of mind.

Most recent ex started messaging me again after a 10 month break. He got with another chick two weeks after we were done, and he's still with her, but for some reason seems to want me on the side or as a back-up in case it falls through. There's really no other reason why he would be popping back up like a stubborn weed all of a sudden.

Pre-FDS me would have salivated over the fact that he's texting me again and probably blown up his phone reassuring him about the breakup, saying "I'll always be there for him", probably even shitting on his current gf and saying that "she isn't right for him." Ugh.

Now all I see is a woman with incredible potential, a Master's in Healthcare Administration, a word traveler with her own house and car, with hobbies like flying planes and rock climbing, tying herself to a manchild with a GED who spends all his time watching anime and bondage porn, can't clean his room, is emotionally constipated, hates his job in the Navy and is about to deploy on a submarine for 2 years, and has no prospects or long-term goals.

And I want to tell *her* that she can do so much better.

But I guess she'll just have to learn like the rest of us.

Yeah that happened 4 years after a bad breakup with my first boyfriend. From what I heard, his PickMe ex girlfriend got him to understand what a shitty boyfriend and person he was and he hit rock bottom and was looking to make somewhat of amends.

Anyway he did they “Hey! How are you? Let’s grab lunch or dinner!” and I was like (in my head)... I had a mental breakdown bc of that relationship. You’d cut me out of your life when I dumped you and then went for a rebound chick 2 weeks later and you blocked me.... I was shocked. He had a knack for begging the PickMe girl all the time but would barely do that for me aaaaand yeah it twisted up my self worth/esteem for a long time

Anyway, he kept asking to go out to eat to “catch up” (he thought we were in the same city still) so I just told him “Hey it’s been like 5 years I don’t live in X City anymore. We can be FB friends if you want but other than that I hope you and your family are well.” So he’s like “No worries! I hope you and your family are too.” “Thanks”

Maybe it wasn’t the best response to even offer to be FB friends (he unblocked me after that interaction) but that was the most civilized and mature thing I could do at that time.

I’ve only had one message from an ex that wasn’t sus and it was from an overseas ex asking if I was ok after the attempted coup, but it was part of a group text to all of us from the school who were now stateside. He was a good man and we broke up when my program in his country was done.

My ex texted me last week “hey what’s up”. Pre-FDS me would have answered to be “nice” but it’s a new year, so I just cleared the notification and moved on. I used to answer his texts about random shit after I ended it, that was my fault, now he probably thinks I’ll answer whenever he texts me
