Ugh the polys and the kinksters. They're both so pretencious and pedantic. Folks I've met in those "communities" manage to make their lives sound so tedious with their rules. If they just kept it underground, they'd have street cred. Now that it's mainstream, early adopters are trying to assert themselves as experts.

My theory about polys is that the men usually generally less attractive than the average population. A man gets one woman and it goes to head. He wants another woman but he knows he'll lose his wife if he dumps her and might not get her back if he goes into the wild because at some level he realizes he's not attractive. Polyamory allows him to presumably get another woman and keep the wife of course. However usually its the wife who gets a man and the husband ends up the third wheel.
