I always cringed seeing my ex with other people because it just looked like a complete act / performance / persona. (He was narcissistic). And he would ignore me when we were around anyone else.

If birds of a feather flock together, does it mean a hvm will have HVM friends too? Or are HVM so rare that that's not possible?

With my late husband, it was the opposite. He was such a dick when it was just he and I. The second we were around other people (especially his family) he was sooo nice and accommodating. I remember one time, a list I’d made went missing and I was anxiously looking for it. His family was over and he acted so helpful and even offered to go look in the outside dumpster for me in case my list had been thrown out in the trash. His mom and his sisters were just gushing over how sweet that was. Meanwhile, I was internally seething because I knew if they hadn’t been there, my husband would have either ignored me, or found some way to mock me over the situation.

Even to this day, people will mention what a nice and caring guy he was. He never showed them what an abusive, smirking asshole he was. It can be a real mind-fuck sometimes.

Oh wow does this describe my ex to T. Sweet as can be with me but a total asshole around his friends and even family. One of his friends even asked me “is there a person under there?” and I was puzzled at the question UNTIL I saw how he acted around them. We all change our behavior at least slightly in different company, but the level of insecurity they must have to completely transform their personalities like that...

OMG yes. I remember being at a bar where my recent ex was (broken up about 6 weeks earlier, from a 7-year relationship) for the birthday of a mutual friend and just being appalled at how he was behaving. It's as if the mist had cleared and I could finally see him for the obnoxious, insecure asshole he was. He was banging on the table and attracting attention to himself and making lewd jokes, and when the girl whose birthday it was asked him to tone it down because her parents were there and none too impressed, he basically called her a bore and told her she'd changed.
