I might be naive but I don't think the BF is purposely making it about him. It's a tough situation. However, OP was the one assaulted, not her boyfriend, and while this might seem harsh to say, she shouldn't have to worry about his mental wellbeing on top of her own.
[–]honeybeerollFDS Disciple70 points71 points72 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, this doesn't seem malicious on the BF's part (of course we don't know about how he behaves otherwise). It is undoubtedly selfish though. Even if it's not malicious selfish, he is creating an undue burden on her when she needs someone to lean on right now. She should absolutely not be worrying about his recovery!
This is actually a situation where communication could work, and by communication I mean she tells him ONCE that he's stressing her tf out, and while she needs and wants him here, she can't have him around if he's going to add a burden onto her recovery from her assault. Either he's mortified at himself, apologizes, and changes (green flag), apologies and doesn't change (red flag), or he gets all butthurt (MAJOR red flag). The latter two means she should dump him, not communicate again why his behavior is a problem.

I don’t think it’s malicious but it’s certainly not high value.
[–]honeybeerollFDS Disciple14 points15 points16 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Agreed. While talking to him may be worth a shot and he may shape up, there is the risk that next time there's a crisis for her or for them both, he'll do the same thing. I think it's really up to her to be honest with herself about the relationship and how she feels about him, if this is something worth talking to him about or if she should just leave now.

Absolutely
[–][deleted] 62 points63 points64 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It’s a bit of a red flag, because I bet this isn’t the first time he’s been selfish. On the other hand, he’s getting therapy, which is remarkable enough for a man. He shouldn’t unload any of his shit about this on to her, that’s for sure. Women are so often expected to mother and care for men, even when they’re the ones that need the care and attention. Overall it’s difficult to judge whether he really sucks and is a manipulative baby from what she described, or whether he is only slightly oblivious.
Edit to add: the OP is the one suffering yet she’s coming to reddit to ask about her boyfriends suffering... that is messed up

This exactly!

Trauma can happen to people who are close to victims. He sounds like he has poor mental health so it's good that he is getting therapy. Of course, his troubles are none of her responsibility, she has enough to deal with. Yeah.... he should handle himself or steps back until he gets better for her sake. That would be the HV thing to do.

I agree ☝️
[–]millennialpink2000FDS Newbie49 points50 points51 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
This feels icky to me not just because he's centering himself as the protagonist in her trauma, but it feels like he sees her as his possession to protect. He's using her to feel "like a man" and feels down on himself only because he failed in his "duty" to protect. I wonder what stories he's telling the therapist and how he's framing himself in relation to this event
[–]berrylikeovaFDS Newbie[S] 17 points18 points19 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Oof. Yes. Thank you. You named the extra sticky feeling I couldn’t put my feeling on. He “failed” her like a bike he left unlocked got stolen.

I thought the same. If he had no way of preventing it, he shouldn't be blaming himself. If he failed to pick her up, refused to go with her somewhere or something like that, I'd understand, but if he had nothing to do with it?
The fact that he's going to therapy, and is apparently attentive to her are good signs. If, despite his therapy, he still doesn't have enough self-control and awareness to see that she is the one who was assaulted and must feel worse, then he'd be a LVM. For now he could go in the right direction.

I'd be very weary about his enrolment in therapy. Guys love women's vulnerability as a way to feel important and special. Proceed with caution
[–]musicallymirroredFDS Newbie23 points24 points25 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
He needs to find someone other than the assault victim to talk to about how hard it is to see someone you care about assaulted. He is making it about himself instead of providing appropriate support and seeking it for himself. Guys should be called out on this.

Honestly he sounds like a little snowflake who just realized the world is dangerous for women and can‘t handle it. Pathetic.

His anxiety about the situation is an additional burden to her. He’s not helping her here at all. Selfish.

I mean, it is effing disgusting. This poor girl was literally ASSAULTED, okay and now not only has to process the emotional fallout from that and all the repercussions, but now she’s gotta stroke her BF’s ego and baby him ON TOP OF IT?! Gtfoh. Handle your own sht! Omg you can’t even be there for your GF rn like seriously, it HAS to be about you?!??
Wtf. Useless.

I don't think this will be received well here but I need to play devil's advocate, because it is far too easy to jump on the hate the man bandwagon, but she describes him as also having good qualities, which you all ignore for his reaction here.
Maybe because I'm trained in mental health, but my first thought wasn't that he was being selfish, or the other negative things said in these comments above, but that he feels like he's failed her, and taken it hard. Yes, he needs to take a breath and make sure he supports her better, but is his response also not of deep empathy? And if he has a history of being abused, this would impact deeper within him. For all we know, this could have been a catalyst for him and this was a momentary relapse. Why do so many women on this sub hate just as intently as the men we know out there are lvm? I will be downvoted for this, but you do.
We cannot be pulled down to becoming the female version of incels, even if we have had to deal with truly shitty men. I have been hurt endlessly by men, but I also have good men in my life, don't you also? I hope you do. Jumping to conclusions is easy to do, I've done it too, but in this regard, it felt important not to jump into that reaction. If I had a truly good man be affected by my assault, and he crashed hard, I would urge him to get support, and I would do the same for me. His human reaction in this regard would not be a reason to steamroll him.
Having said all of this, the guy could actually be an absolute shit partner, and she could possibly do better without him. And nothing I've said here detracts from the fact that this woman was just another statistic in the horrific line of females who have been hurt by a man, so I am absolutely not defending those who are predators, for there is no excuse. Actually, in an opposite tone to this post, there's a part of me that thinks that proven rapists should be fully castrated, so I know what justified anger feels like.
The point is none of us know the full truth, so try not to jump straight into hate. It's exhausting. I think I just need to remind myself that good men exist (because they do), and not all of them want to hurt us.
This might be projection rn.
Also, fuck abusers to hell.

Fact is she’s on Reddit asking for help helping her bf through her own abuse healing. It’s gross.
You make valuable points and I do in fact have a hvm of a husband. Yet I see this all the time and it’s so disheartening.

It is not good, I agree.
I just know that we can't predict how we will react to trauma. When my dad was suddenly diagnosed stage 4, my depression spiked and I started losing myself to it. I held it sort of together until he passed 3 months later and then I crashed hard. Never would have thought prior that that would be my reaction, as I was focussing on him and helping him get through, but stress can fuck you up. It's easy to judge situations we aren't actually in, and there are always a million factors that we have no knowledge of that contribute to the tiny window of which we are shown.
But I do feel for her, what she experienced didn't deserve the extra stress of having to pick him up too. It's just... Human though.
