I saw a thread where men were talking about times they've been creeped out by women. Some guy's big traumatic story was about middle aged women at work sexually harassing him by making inappropriate comments. Everyone was so supportive like oh my god that's so horrible I'm so sorry that happened to you, see this happens to men too. But honestly? Nearly every young woman has dealt with middle aged men sexually harassing us at work. But if we dare complain on a platform like reddit the comments are peppered with things like like "welllllll you know a lot of young women actually PREFER middle aged men" and variations of "there's nothing wrong with shooting your shot, give the guy a break, it's hard to ask girls out" "don't be ageist" and all other kinds of bullshit. Not to mention implications that we're lyring, or suggestions that we should be flattered.

But my biggest problem with it is that even though sexual harassment is disgusting and unacceptable from both genders IT IS STILL NOT THE SAME. Because as far as physical danger goes, a middle aged woman vs a young man is not the same as a middle aged man vs a young woman. A group of middle aged women is not nearly as life threatening as a group of middle aged men. It's not the same.

People are more upset by talking about inequality than by the inequality itself. So if we can artificially inflate how bad women are, while silencing and covering up the endless accounts of males targeting females, we can construct an imaginary world where everything is already equal and therefore no action or self-examination is required on our part.

Also, when you hate a group of people, you have an appetite for stories that justify that hatred. When you are fond of a group of people, you have a distaste for any evidence of wrongdoing from that group.
