So I was scrolling through tiktok over lunch today and I came across this video wherein an openly queer man responds to a comment stating

"the idea that a man who has emotional intelligence and doesn't agree with gender norms must be a trans woman is pretty harmful imo"

https://www.tiktok.com/@northsouth8968/video/7057543918245940526

And what he said is something I've seen echoed in many ways throughout the discourse in masculinity

One of the most common occurances being some reiteration of

"when you ask somebody talking about toxic masculinity to define positive masculinity they'll often give gender neutral or feminine traits"

And I think both the framing and unique perspective of this short video is something unique that we should consider in these conversations.

When all traits that are seen as positive are not seen as masculinity. Then yes. What we are seeing is an attack on masculinity. and not just the "toxic" aspects

And I think that a part of the problem is that the people who are talking and prescribing solutions to "harmful masculinity" don't really understand masculinity at all.

They believe that masculinity requires they "engage in acts of psychic self-mutilation" (via hooks).

But as somebody who grew up in a very "masculine" upbringing. This is simply not true. And I think the following comment (from menslib of all places) really highlights this.

What a lot of MensLib people don’t get (usually because this sub is full of college-educated people that grew up in middle class and above environments) is that what you call “toxic masculinity” is often about survival. In a highly aggressive environment, showing any sign of weakness makes you a mark. It makes you come one to be picked on over and over again. It’s also why POC communities in America display higher rates of homophobia (and it’s usually towards just gay men/trans women, who are seen as violating the strict social code of being seen as a masculine figure). No man can opt out of this system without being automatically targeted. If someone disrespects you you can’t let it slide or else people will do it forever.

Now, I'm aware that I've just went on a tangent about a slightly different topic I'm going to tie it together with the idea presented in the initial video.

and this is that the othering of masculinity and lack of insight into what makes it tick is part of why people often attack it as a whole without really understanding that they're doing it. There is no real place for men who don't feel like masculinity requires they "engage in acts of psychic self-mutilation" in more progressive gender conversations. Because that is the assumption of what masculinity entails.

it's something I'm sure many of us have noticed. When we see those who rally against "toxic masculinity" or even "masculinity" in general. They're often presenting an unrealistic or exaggerated strawman. and they're coming from such an outside position that they're not really aware of it.
