Haven't seen HOD, but there is a rape scene in the movie Midsommar that people often don't see as rape. Literally drugged a guy and forced him to have sex.

Spoilers for Ep 4.

It's incredible how differently Daemon's and Rhaenyra's actions were treated in the public discourse. Daemon was vilified as a predator for luring her into the brothel and seducing her, and yet Rhaeneyra was celebrated despite Daemon's advances being far more consensual than Rhaenyra's. Obviously the incest angle complicates what Daemon did, but that has to be balanced against the context of Targaryen history. Meanwhile he's clearly conflicted about the how ordeal, while Rhaenyra doesn't have a care in the world.

What she did wasn't just rape, it was essentially (attempted) negligent homicide as Cristin will be put to death if the events ever come to light.

I wonder if the writers are disappointed over how it's been received? To me it seems like a deliberate plot development meant to illustrate how none of the players in the story are the "good guys", and yet very few people seem to find any issue in what happened.

Well, there's no way the guard could have said no without negative consequences coming to him, and he didn't look like he wanted it. So yeah, it's rape.

She turned his "no" into a "yes." Apparently it's only ethically concerning when a man does that.

It's all the more funny because if you watch the writer and director commentaries, it's clear that they are quite woke. E.g. it was important for the director to do the brothel scene correctly; no more of this male gaze nonsense.

And then oopsie their Mary Sue protagonist is arguably a rapist...

Yes, we did. Technically two rapes, although Alicent's was far less egregious, imo, but guess which one seems to garner more recognition and empathy from the audience/cinematography.

I'm admittedly enjoying the irony of watching so many women, who would surely have been foaming at the mouth with feminist rage had the genders been reversed, argue that the Rhaenyra/Cole encounter was totally fine, when it was actually textbook Weinstein. Except the unstated implication of "you'll never work in this town again" gets replaced with "you'll be castrated, beheaded, and/or fed to a dragon."

Bonus points for people proudly mentioning that the episode was directed by a woman.

I don’t really think we could call that rape, but worth mentioning that:

1 - People would problematize a male character stealing a kiss from a female one, which is of course a double standard.

2 - I guess it largely depends on your worldview. Reddit seems to believe that it’s immoral for a man in position of power to sleep with a female subordinate, so I can definitely call them out on their hypocrisy here, because Criston Cole is Rhaenyra’s subordinate too. Personally, I believe things are more complicated than that regardless of gender.

3 - My interpretation of the scene is that Criston Cole was conflicted not because he wasn’t sure if he wanted to have sex, but because he felt reticent about breaking his vows, specially with the future queen.

To sum it up, it’s a scene that doesn’t constitute rape in my book, but that could’ve been more controversial if the genders were reversed, given people’s blatant double standards.

No, we did not. I would like to live in a world where the words rape and statutory rape do not have the same root - that being said I don't think we saw a rape but a statutory rape.

Many instances of sex in GOT universe are statutory rape. What I think is the issue, that you should have used as a title, is what you are saying in 4:42:

The issue is how the scene is framed by the creative tea. It ignores the material consequences for the man.

George RR Martin is a bit obsessed with weird sex (and weird violence). I’m not surprised a scene out of one of his series will cause confusion; neither am I surprised that modern gynocentric culture won’t see double standards in it even when they are rampant. But I haven’t seen HOD.
