You constantly hear “women are afraid to walk alone at night“ as if that signals the holy trinity of female oppression. Women feel as if they are at a disadvantage, and are a specialty target within society. Which triumph's men's larger statistical probability of violent assault, murder, robbery, and any other form of street crime. We put women's emotional irrationality in front of men's physical health and safety.

Gender Roles and Helping Behavior

Overall, participants were most likely to help females in dangerous situations, followed by females in emotional situations, males in dangerous situations, and males in emotional situations.

I actually read this study the other day -

Gender, Socially Desirable Responding and the Fear of Crime: Are Women Really More Anxious about Crime?

In this article, the authors use survey data to explore relationships between gender, fear of crime and socially desirable responding. The data show that for men, but not women, reported fear levels are inversely related to scores on a so-called ‘lie scale’, which measures the tendency to provide socially desirable rather than totally candid responses.

This pattern holds irrespective of age and suggests that the genders are affected differently by social pressure to downplay fears about crime. Statistical analyses suggest that this tendency is likely to be responsible for the observed inclination for males to report lower levels of crime-related anxieties. In fact, males may actually be more afraid of crime than women when this tendency is quantified and corrected for.

Essentially, once you adjust the survey process for social desirability bias and intentional dishonesty in surveys where a respondent may be more likely to “lie“ to match the societal expectations put upon them ━ women are expected to be afraid ━ men are expected to be tough and not show any quantifiable emotion, especially fear when it opposes his forced masculine outlook ━ men may on average be more afraid of crime than women.

It isn't surprising, men are more likely to face street crime in general, and this would cause men to face more PTSD related experiences caused by a prior traumatic experience of street violence. I also wonder how social desirability (and other intentional causations of response dishonesty) would effect survey data relating to men, especially data pertaining to rape and domestic violence victimization, which already find a fairly even split between the sexes, yet has a larger basis of discrimination and lack of admittance within men.

This is fucking amazing. Turning the lights off is the perfect metaphor for the deliberate blindness people have for male problems, and reinforcing the metaphor with the visuals is just chef's kiss communication.

Don’t go in, they did it to themselves, they belong there, it’s their fault, they deserve it.

They are the fathers losing children in secret family courts, the male victims of rape erased from legislation and the advocates cowed into silence.

They are the failing school boys we failed, the hopeless homeless left unhelped, and the incarcerated unwell, addicted and innocent.

The faceless victims nobody cries for, the shocking headlines left unwritten and survivors with nowhere to go.

Yes you can hide it, you can wave it away or turn off the lights.But just because we don’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not there.
