His argument wasn’t that the reporter would do something wrong to him. It was that the opposition would try and get a picture of them together and run an ad claiming he’s up to something. Such an ad would be run in a timeframe that didn’t allow for a response.

What’s irrational about this? If a female candidate refused to be alone with a male reporter for the same reason I’d be fine with that. No one is accusing the woman reporter of anything.
