This is funny. She was counting on no one knowing what it's like inside of NASA. Interns are the lowest of low on the totem pole. An internship means you have the opportunity to prove yourself and be offered a job at the end. There are some really great, smart people at NASA who could make more money in the commercial world. But, being a federal agency, there's a lot of dead wood. The great people put stuff up in space. The dead wood write documents and code that no one uses. She missed out on an opportunity of a lifetime. NASA has a looooooong memory.

Government agencies (NASA is primarily funded by the government, so they are basically a government agency) will do as much as they can to push diversity agendas. This includes hiring any women that even have the slightest STEM on their resume and education. This does not make them special, this makes them coddled.
