I am just barely old enough to see the irony in this. It used to be the men of the Silent Generation and the early Baby Boomer generation would use the saying "A real man ..." while teaching their children ethics. Like anything else in life, some of it was good and some of it was caustic. Yet at the time it was most definitely considered a masculine trait and not something a mother would talk about. The irony of this being that feminists view everything masculine as being toxic, and yet stating "A real man ..." originates from their fathers and grandfathers method of expressing masculinity and being a good father figure while teaching ethics. Later generations got lazy or something and simply replaced it with " You need to man up!"
