While a certain percentage will never believe your innocence anyway, a much larger portion will be swayed when they see "Bill Cosby settles with accuser" vs "Bill Cosby vindicated in court".

except that multi year court battle will cost you huge amounts of personal reputation, income, future income (based off reputation), and the wide dispersal of information will bring it to the attention of more people. Plus, most people don't get that court takes years even for the stupidest things, so there will be lots that say, just because he was in court means something happened. There is no escaping the social cost of an allegation.

(example of court taking forever, Keanu Reeves having to 'demand' paternity tests for a number of children from a random, crazy Ontario(?) woman he had never met who decided to name him as their father. Took years. If it had been less absurd lunacy, I am sure there would be a substantial number that would believe he was somehow involved with her so that even needing the test wasn't inappropriate).

Innocent people don't just bend over.

Go read the Brian Banks story, that simply isn't true.

The Keanu Reeves story was to point out that the case took forever. There were also other clear signals - he is rarely, if ever, in Ontario, was unlikely to have ever met the woman, etc.

Even with that, if the accusation had been rape and had some elements of credibility - which is to say, there was a chance they were in the same area at the same time - there would be a lot of people who said he did it regardless of the legal outcome. There is no win. The length of time the case goes on the worse it gets and the more it costs you in your lifetime earnings. Paying it to go away quickly is a solid business decision, small cost up front and minimal impact on future earnings - and an artist/actor is a business.

I am not actually stating an opinion on Cosby, but a settlement out of court or pleading guilty for a plea deal is meaningless in terms of actual innocence or guilt.
